Question ID: 196739
I just purchased a new Sony KF-60XBR800, 60 inch LCD television set
from The Great Indoors (A Sears Company).

I connected the set to a Time Warner cable converter box, and then to
the Time Warner, in the wall, cable connection.

The picture is absolutely perfect when I use the converter box to
watch HBO, or a similar channel from the converter box.

However – when I turn on the local NBC, CBS, or ABC stations, with the
converter box, the picture is fuzzy, granular, and not acceptable.

I disconnected the converter box, and connected the Sony directly into
the cable wall connection. The local stations were still fuzzy and
granular.
(Of course, without the converter box, I could not get HBO or similar
channels)

I don’t know if I should call Sears, the Time Warner cable company, or
bring in a qualified third party technician.

My TV knowledge is limited, and this has me baffled.

Any suggestions, as to where I should start?

I think I know what the problem might be - what channel numbers are
you having a problem with?

What do the local channels look like on a regular TV? Also, are the
local channels the only ones that come in bad, or do some of the other
stations also?

Hello rmn-ga:
You asked: what channel numbers are you having a problem with?
Answer:
I receive poor reception on all of the lower number channels, such as 2, 3, 4 etc.

Hello mvguy-ga:
You asked: What do the local channels look like on a regular TV?
Answer:
I have another smaller tube type TV. And, the local channels look OK.
However, the new Sony 60 inch set is much larger than my smaller set.
And, it is hard to compare the two sets, because the Sony is so large.

Also you asked:
Are the local channels the only ones that come in bad, or do some of
the other stations also?
Answer: All of the lower number channels have poor reception.
Local channels and other cable channels.

Do you have the problem on channels 7 through 13? If not, I'd guess
that the problem is a loose connection somewhere, or maybe a bad
switch. The problem could also be in the TV. If it's not too much
hassle (and with a TV that size it might be), I'd suggest hooking up
the TV at someone else's house and see if it still occurs. If you can
try that, could you tell us what happens? Thanks.

I want thank everyone for the comments:
I am going to check all of the connections.
Call Time Warner Cable Company.
And, hope that I do not need to replace the TV set.
Thanks again,

Is there anyone out there, who has a Sony KF-60XBR800, 60 inch LCD
television set? If you have one, or know someone who has, please
comment as to the reception on all of the channels, with or without a
converter box.

When I was in several of the stores that have this set on display, I
now believe that they were showing the set with DVD, or with excellent
satellite reception. With hindsight, I should have asked to see a
wide spectrum of channels, along with local channels.
Thank you, clicker5-ga

There may be other factors aside from the obvious ones that may be
causing the problem. Even if you are able to locate these problems,
chances are, you still can't do anything about it. Given this, I think
that if I were you, I'd just call for a technician from your cable
service provider to inspect and fix what needs to be fixed.
