Hello Trent44, It's a combination of C/C++ and Assembly, according to various sources. (Only Microsoft knows for sure, but they don't provide the source code to their Operating System.) The following discussion provides reasonable speculations to answer your question: What language is Windows written in? http://discuss.fogcreek.com/joelonsoftware/default.asp?cmd=show&ixPost=28914 Similar information can be found in technical newsgroups. Windows applications on the other hand are written in many different languages such as Visual C++, Visual Basic, or Java. Hope it helps! Search strategy: Google and Google Groups Search terms: "what language * windows written in" "what language * windows * written in" |

Here's the official word straight from the horse's mouth: "It was written primarily in C++, with some machine language mixed in. Most of the new code is written in C++." --Bill Gates http://www.microsoft.com/billgates/columns/1995q&a/QA951220.asp |
