Hello Bcihuan Li: First let me answer the GRE question and than I will list schools according to your criteria. My research has indicated that most schools that grant PhD in Piano performance do not require the GRE exam. Instead, they rely on the artistic abilities and the history of the individuals. This is done by an audition. Yes, there are some exceptions but they are rare. Although, the average score of the GRE is unknown but it can be assumed that it would be low and can differ from school to school. The assumption is based on the average GRE score of admittance to the liberal art programs compared to engineering & science programs. The average GRE of the graduate science & engineering program in the top 25 schools of the nation fell in the range of 783-613. On the other hand the average GRE score of the nations top 25 liberal arts program in the top 25 schools of the nation fell between 640-500. (US News survey 2000). Most of the programs that require GRE fall into four distinct categories: 1. Universities that require GRE for their music program. For example: http://www.music.ucsb.edu/ (University of California Santa Barbara) 2. Universities that do not require you to take GRE for music but require candidates to get admission into their graduate and music school at the same time. Admission to graduate school will thus require GRE. For example: http://www.music.lsu.edu/ (Louisiana State University) 3. Universities that require GRE for some of their music programs. For example: http://www.music.umn.edu/ (University of Minnesota) 4. Universities that may require GRE during the admission process. For example: http://www.wisc.edu/music/ (University of Wisconsin) Some Universities require candidates to take GRE if they want to apply for fellowships. I started my research by following the admission process of the nations top universities that provide Doctorate in Piano Performance and came to the conclusion that 90 percent of these universities doesnt require any kind of GRE. I am providing you the names of nineteen top institutions (US News Survey 2000) that dont require GRE and provide a doctorate in Piano Performance. I am also providing you a website that lists hundreds of music schools so that you can look yourself for any further information. I am also listing nations top five schools in Piano Performance and will list 30 top music graduate schools in music (If you require). They may or may not provide PHD in piano performance (although most do and are included in my list). Please use this directory for further research. Sorry I was not able to review your research result because my computer was broken. Your answer is very clear and detailed, thank you. I am wondering if you would be also find the information for the Language requirement of completing the program. I think it might be easier for you to get this result instead of I posting the question for a new researcher. I will be happy to tip you for the result. |
