Hi - I am trying to find references to home fiber production
(specifically handspinning) in the north during the era just prior to
and during the Civil War. I have found many references to spinning
bees and the like in the Southern states, but very few, if any, to
spinning, weaving, etc. in the homes of Northerners. I was told that
there was no handspinning being done in the North during the Civil
War, but given that factories needed to produce great quantities of
cloth for uniforms and didn't have as many resources for producing
their usual cloth, I find it hard to believe that there was none at
all. References that served as pointers to more detailed information
that I can follow up and read more about would be particularly
welcome.
