Question ID: 197888
I'd like a list of the 40 best trade shows/seminars in the US for the
creative/design market (including dates, locations and contact info).
To qualify for the list, the attendees need to be creative
professionals working in print design, marketing/branding
professionals involved in the creative end of the business, or
packaging desigers. Please, no digital animation/audio shows in the
list.

Request for Question Clarification by ctw-ga on 01 May 2003 07:48 PDT
Hi creative search,

'Best' can be subjective. Please clarify: Most established? Most
attended? Greatest number of workshops/seminars? Most targeted
workshops? Better for aspiring pros? Better for established pros?
Both? Maybe networking opportunities are important, and would make it
a 'better' show. Is 'best' related to price at all?

Which is more relevant to your needs: print design or packaging? Or
maybe trade shows that encompass both? Is the focus more online or
offline, or both- since marketing creative needs to be integrated?

Understanding your needs would make it easier to provide research that
suits your requirements.

Clarification of Question by creativesearch-ga on 01 May 2003 08:41 PDT
Hello ctw, - thanks for the quick response. You're quite correct
about best being subjective. Hopefully this will help clarify our
needs a little bit more. We would definitely prefer packaging to
straight print design (though overlap is ok and appreciated) and
offline to on (but the same goes for overlap - if both, it'd be
acceptable).

Number of workshops/seminars doesn't matter; a larger number of
attendees would be better, assuming they're from the desired target
group. (For example, I wouldn't consider a packaging machinery show
with 100,000 attendees to rank as highly as a creative training
session with 5,000 people who are all working as professional
designers with some packaging experience)

Most established doesn't matter; good networking/industry influence
would have more weight. Though I'd love to be in a position that says
"price is no object", it is, so a show with more bang for the buck
should rate higher in the list.

If this clarification results in two separate lists (of 20 each, for
example) then that'd be ok too. Please let me know if you need any
more clarification!

Hello there.

I have a list, but to tell the truth, I'm having a hard time knowing
which trade shows reallyt fit the bill for your needs. I'm also not
clear just how much information your are looking for on each show.

The listings I have are all in the format of the ones below. Can you
tell me which of these, if any, would be of interest to you (ignoring
the fact that some of them have already occurred -- I just want to
zero on on the types of shows of interest to you):

The Printwear Show Apr 24 - Apr 26, 2003 United States Indianapolis

SGIA '04 (Screenprinting & Graphic Imaging Association International)
Oct 06 - Oct 09, 2004 Minneapolis

Informservices - The Print Solutions Conference & Expo Oct 22 - Oct
24, 2003 United States Las Vegas

Imprinted Sportswear Show - Atlantic City Mar 14 - Mar 16, 2003
Atlantic City

San Francisco Design & Furnishings Show Jan 17 - Jan 20, 2003 San
Francisco

The ACCI Show (The Association of Crafts & Creative Industries Show)
Jul 15 - Jul 17, 2005 Rosemont

----------

Would 40 or so listings along these lines be a suitable answer, or are
you looking for something more/different?

Hello, creativesearch-ga!

I have found some conferences and trade shows that should be
applicable to your needs. Because there is still some confusion over
what "types" of conferences might be acceptable and you have not been
able to get back with additional clarification as of yet, I am posting
a list of approximately 20 conferences which seem especially suitable.

However, it might open up some doors if you mentioned the industry
you represent, and/or which industries you might consider compatible
with your business. Conferences and trade shows may be "hidden" under
an industry classification, and may pop up if I can be more specific
in a search.

For example, you mentioned in your clarification that you would not
expect "a packaging machinery show with 100,000 attendees to rank as
highly as a creative training session with 5,000 people who are all
working as professional designers with some packaging experience."
While I did find some packaging machinery conferences, I did not list
them because they mentioned nothing about design in their agenda.
However, if these types of conferences are also applicable to your
needs, I will list some.

It would also be helpful to know if the conferences listed are on the
right track. I cannot guarantee that there are 40 major conferences
that are primarily focused on package design, or
branding/packaging/design, but I may be able to find some others if I
have some directions for "branching out." I don't want to get into
areas of graphic design that are off track!

It is also important to note that 2003 is half over, and many trade
shows and conferences for 2004 are not yet listed. Therefore, the
calender is a bit skimpy at this point. For example, there is no use
telling you about the "Interaction and Design" Conference that has
already passed !! (http://www.ttivanguard.com/a_conferences.htm )

The following is what I have compiled thus far!

Hello everyone,

I've taken a look at both the lists posted; regarding the two lists,
the second is closer to what I am looking for. (from the first list,
the imprinted Sportswear show is not what I'm looking for and I
suspect that the Printwear show isn't either)

The second list is much much better! I'd consider compatible
industries anything that deals with packing design for consumer
products. The cosmetics industry links are pretty good, and I like
the "Packaging that Sells" conference as well. However, PackExpo,
though it seems like it could be perfect, is really a big show about
machines . . .

Even if listings for 2004 are a bit skimpy, if you can provide contact
info for conferences that have already occurred in 2003 (and appear to
be regular conferences as opposed to one-off events) I'd consider them
as qualifying for the list.

Thanks, and please let me know if you need any more clarification!

Clarification of Answer by umiat-ga on 13 May 2003 12:19 PDT
Hello again, creativesearch!

Here are some more conferences! Although many of these occurred during
the early part of 2003, or late 2002, they appear to be annual events.
Their location may change, however.

To be honest, I am now running in circles and coming up with the same
conferences over and over again. If you were looking for conferences
in Canada, the UK or France, I could come up with many more! However,
maybe that will be a different question in the future!!

Admittedly, some of the conferences listed may be off the
mark....especially the two photography conferences. Since one
emphatically mentioned a print component, I included it since I am
still unclear about the design medium used by your company.

I have tried my best to come up with everything available that seems
remotely applicable to your needs. I think I have exhausted the
resources. I truly hope that some of these additional conferences are
useful. In the future, if I can help you with some more specific
information, please let me know. You many address the question to me,
or open it up to all researchers.

I have truly enjoyed exploring this answer for you. After
approximately 8 more hours exploring additional conferences, I think I
have reached the end of the road. I hope this additional list is
satisfactory.

Thanks so much for your patience.

Once again.....thank you for your patience. It may take a few more
nights until I quit dreaming about packaging design!!!!!
creativesearch-ga rated this answer:4 out of 5 stars
I'm torn between four and five stars - it's not perfect (i.e. there
aren't exactly 40 conferences; I'm sure there are others hiding out
there, like Mac Design Conference, which has a heavy focus on
print/desingers, etc.) but for the amount of time & research put in,
and the overall quality of the answer, I think it deserves at least 4
stars.

Thanks again for the research; it's definitely helped!
