Have you tried opening the file in Notepad? Sometimes examining a file
of unknown type in a text editor can provide some clues.

Hi lilsassyfras-ga,

Also, can you make the file accessible via
the Internet? If so, one of the researchers
could download and examine the file.

Looks like it might be one part of a multi-part archive

Maybe created by a disk backup utility?

I agree with yabbadab that based on the name and size of this file,
I'd be almost 100% certain that it's a part of a multipart spanned
archive. I know that archival utilities such as WINZIP can create
files such as this when spanning archives across multiple disks and
I've also seen applications such as Quickbooks creates files similar
to this when it creates it's own internal backup files and floppy disk
is chosen as the backup device.

Now, it's possible that this is simply a single part archive of some
sort (like the Quickbooks archive that I mentioned) but trying to
determine what it is may be difficult unless the application that
created it stored some information in a header as a part of the file.
Opening the file in Wordpad or with a Hex Editor may allow you to see
some plain text information and give you some clues.

Good luck!
