I am working on starting an online war site. Very much like
http://www.outwar.com and http://www.kingsofchaos.com . I was
wondering if you could tell me who all of my competition is online? Or
are these two sites that I have given the only people online running
text based war games. Also if you could tell me the date all of the
competition started and where they stand as far as the busiest sites
on the net. For example where do they rank and how long have they been
in business.

Hello Emailproject,

The best way to find out the competitors to Kings of Chaos and Outwar
(and how well they rank) is to search the Google Web Directory for
"Kings of Chaos" and "Outwar", and check the other entries in that
category [1]:

Google Directory - Games > Internet > Browser Based > Strategy
http://directory.google.com/Top/Games/Internet/Browser_Based/Strategy/?il=1

The higher up on that page, the more popular. (That doesn't mean the
site is the busiest or makes the most money, even though it helps as
an indicator -- rather this is speaking in terms of Google's
definition of web popularity, that is, PageRank and so on.)

Also, entering related:www.kingsofchaos.com [2] into Google gets some
sites, similar to using the TouchGraph Google Browser [3], but it's
not as useful as above strategy. Added to that it's a good idea to
search the web and Google Groups for strings like "it's like Kings of
Chaos", but this didn't yield too many results this time. Finally, one
can use Google Sets [4] using two or more terms, but I already got
enough results from the first strategy of looking up the category.

Now, the somewhat harder part of your question is "how long have they
been in business", but then again that can be approximated by looking
up the date the domain was created. I use a WHOIS-database lookup [5]
for that purpose and will give you the dates here for the top 10
(top-level .com/.net) competitors, along with the site description:

The games you refer are not as common as other online games, so I
think you would benefit from joining to a website already popular and
blend in with the games already listed. That way you would get a lot
more of attention. As an example, you can check <a
href="http://www.k1ck.com/k1ck2005/" target="_blank">K1ck Clan Online
Gaming Website</a> for reference.
