I use Windows XP Home. Frequently when using various programs, I get
an error message "couldn't find password value". When I go into
Control panel "User account",I see no evidence that I have ever had a
password. I am the only one that can get near my computer, and I
really really don't want a password. However, the little error message
every hour or so, is annoying, even thought it doesn't seem to bother
any of the programs. How do I prevent the error messge? |

Hello art1965,
I suspect that an application, and not Windows XP is causing this. I
cannot think of why (or what inside) Windows XP would be giving you
this error message.
Do you remember when this started? Did you install any new software
prior to this starting? What is the EXACT error message including the
text on the titlebar of the error? What are you doing when this
happens?

Hi Art1965,
Maybe it's some sort of automatic reminder you set up. Either that, or
a kind of virus/ spyware/ auto-dialer, or some other unwanted
application.
My question: Is the phrase "couldn't find password value" the exact
wording of the alert, and the only text that shows up on it?
Thanks.

The problem started when I got Windows. XP. The error message occurs
when I'm using various programs, -e.g. Microsoft Publisher. Eudora
mail, Photopaint, RealAudio.
The exact message: in the blue field at top it says "Password
Error" with a white on red square close button and in the lower
white field above the o.k. button, it says "Couldn't find password
value" The small window is 1 5/8" wide by 1" high It
occurs when the computer is sitting idle as well as when I'm actively
using a program.

I am unwilling to answer this question at this point because this
problem could be so many things and there is a limit to the amount of
time I can dedicate for this question. I am willing to work with you
however and attempt to get a solution. If we arrive at a solution,
please tell me in a clarification so that I can submit it as an
official answer.
Please follow these instructions carefully and get back to me:
1. Click Start and then click Control Panel.
2. On the left side of the control panel, you should see "Switch to
Classic View" I want you to click on this.
3. You should now see an icon that says "Administrative Tools". Please
double click this icon.
4. Now double click on "Event Viewer"
5. You will now see the Event Viewer open with icons for Application,
Security and System.
I want you to take a look at all of them, and try to find a match for
the exact date and time that this error happens. You might also want
to wait for it to happen again, and use the clock on your start menu
(double click the time to get it to the second if you prefer). An
error log should appear in either Application or System matching the
time of your error. There might also be multiple errors. This is what
I want you to do when you find the culprit:
1. Right click the culprit (error) in either System or Applications
(or both depending on where a log is generated) and click on
Properties.
2. You will see an icon with two pieces of paper (copy icon). Click
this icon.
3. Reply to my Clarification Request and right click on the box where
you type in text. Click on Paste. It should paste something that looks
like this:
Event Type: Information
Event Source: crypt32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7
Date: 4/30/2003
Time: 12:15:31 PM
User: N/A
Computer: NEWDELL
Description:
Successful auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence
number from: <http://www.download.windowsupdate.com/msdownload/update/v3/static/trustedr/en/authrootseq.txt>
Repeat step 1 and 2 for EACH error generated in ONE incident of this
happening. This will really help me narrow down the problem and find a
solution for you.
Note that If the error is under Application, then there is an
application installed on your system that is causing this. We would
then work to narrow down which app is doing this by disabling
individual applications.
Note that if it is a System error, I would then work with you to find
a solution to that.
I do look forward to your response.

This morning, when I got up, the only application running was
Sidekick, my organizer, and in the middle of the screen was the Error
window with the same message as always, which had occurred since I was
using the computer last night. I opened Event Viewer and looked at
all three, Application, Security and System. There were no errors
under Application nor Security.
Under System there were two errors last evening, having to do with my
unsuccessful attempt to use my old laserjet printe, which I don't use
any more. It wouldn't print, but that's a different problem.Since the
printer errors there were two Information messages and one Warning,
the latest being the Warning.

Further information Monday mid-day -- When I came home after a few
hours away from my computer, Sidekick was on screen and the little
error window was in the middle of it. I opened Event Viewer, and
checked al three, and there were NO events shown since I looked this
morning, so whatever is putting the erro window on my screen is not
being noted as an event. Sidekick was the only application running. I
am not very familiar with it, but I suppose it has scheduling
capacities that may be trying to tell me something. I don't uswe it
except for keeping my calendar appointments, routine and otherwise.

Have you tried uninstalling Sidekick? Whatever app is causing this is
obviously not an app that was meant to work with Windows XP. Any
password error messages should be showing up in Event Viewer. Try
right clicking the application and click on Compatibility. Click Run
this program in compatibility mode for: Windows 98.
Do the same for the icon in Start, Programs, Startup if there is one
there. You may need to restart the computer to test this. This may
prevent the error from occuring if it is a Windows XP Incompatibility
that is causing this.
