hi job7879!
It sounds like your iMac has been scheduled to shut down at a specific
time in the afternoon. You should be able to disable this setting, as
follows:
1) Got to Apple Menu (left corner) and select "Control Panels"
2) Choose "Energy Saver" from the drop-down list
3) When the control panel has opened, click on "Schedule"
4) Disable setting "Shut down the computer" by clicking on the small
check box next to it - there should be no "tick" in this box.
Hopefully, this should sort out your problem and it shouldn't be
necessary to do a clean install.
You can read more about the "Energy Saver" control panel here:
http://www.macoptions.com/cps/energy.html
Let me know if this works out, or if you need further assistance.
regards,
--Jack

Thanks Jack, but the shut-off box is not now, nor never has been
ticked so I can't untick it. Also, I noticed the screen's whites had
turned beigey one afternoon, as if the gamma was going.

Just to clarify - are all energy control panel awake options checked
"off"?
do you have any 3rd USB periphals plugged in?
has this been happening since loading any new software?
have you tried switching off your extensions to see if makes any
difference?
what OS are you using? (you should be able to find this in "Apple
System Profiler"?
I have looked in a few forums and have found similar problems being
reported, especially with OS9.04.

Every Mac stores a variety of important settings in something called
"Parameter RAM" - PRAM for short. The contents of PRAM can become
corrupted, causing no end of unusual behavior. With the exception of
date and time, all system-wide preferences are reset to default values
by zapping the Parameter RAM (PRAM). Hold down the Command-Option-P-R
keys at startup until the Macintosh restarts itself a second time.
Then release the keys and let startup proceed normally. This resets
the parameter RAM (PRAM). It should also reset the settings for the
desktop pattern and the color depth of the monitor.
Let me know if this helps!
You can read more zapping the pram, here:

JacK: I aways zap the pram when I have to restart, so that's not it.
This morning re-installed both printers, scanner, CD burner. (USB
peripherals) Will see if this helps. No new software. Yes, I'm using
OS 9.0.4, have been looking in Mac Fixit Forum, but so far (20 pages)
found no joy yet. Will be in touch again when outcome of reinstalls
occur (either it shuts off again or doesn't -ystdy it shut down at
noon insyead of of 3-ish.) Unless you know something more to suggest.
Thank you

Dear Jack: Re-installing peripherals didn't work. It switched itself
off around noon again. But are you sure it's a software problem? Would
defragging /optimizing system (Norton) be worth trying before finally
doing a clean-install (Software Restore in place,, altho I hope I
won't lose e-mail, etc. Will put prefs on desktop 1st, and stick em
back in when finished)? Are there any other options for me?
Thank you,

hi job,
just got your message!
Yes, there are still a few options you could try.
I'll post my suggestions shortly...

You could try the following:
1) defrag hard drive as you suggested (but i doubt this will work)
2) restore in place system files - if so, i would also suggest you
make a back-up of your emails etc, just in case (preferrably on a
separate disk)
3) verify the "reset" button on the side is de-pressed (obvious
suggestion)
3) Update your OS to 9.1 using the installer which you can download
here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75103&SaveKCWindowURL=http%3A%2F%2Fkbase.info.apple.com%2Fcgi-bin%2FWebObjects%2Fkbase.woa%2Fwa%2FSaveKCToHomePage&searchMode=Assisted&kbhost=kbase.info.apple.com&showButton=false&randomValue=100&showSurvey=false&sessionID=anonymous|169626877
(it's a big download -71MB, but you can download it in 15 separate
bits)
4) Download a demo of "Conflict Catcher" - it will help you determine
which system files are causing the problem if there is a conflict
http://www.casadyg.com/products/conflictcatcher/default.html
5) Check all the data in your system file to determine if your system
is corrupted, with "Techtool Lite" :
http://www.micromat.com/tt_lite/tt_lite.html (size: 2.5Mb)
For immediate download click here:
http://hyperarchive.lcs.mit.edu/HyperArchive/Archive/disk/tech-tool-lite-304.hqx
---------------------------------
I would suggest you start by downloading Techtool Lite. It is more of
a diagnostic program and should help you determine if the problem is
with the hardware or software. If it is not a hardware issue, then i
would try using "Conflict Catcher" to try and establish what is
conflicting with what. Incidentally, i spoke to a friend of mine who
is graphic designer and he informed me that when he is performing a
specific task in Adobe Illustrator, his computer suddenly goes to
sleep... perhaps, you are doing something in a particular program that
is somehow causing the computer to shut down?

JacK: thanks, but tech tool says no problems, can't up grade to 9.1
(the 9.0.4 is the only cd that will boot my dutch-speaking mac into
english, and it's for a g4- I have a g3, but it's been working for the
last 2-3 years). Tried and tried to up grade, just wouldn't do
it.Guess I will do clean install this aftn. thanks. Next letter will
tell you if problem solved (or not).

Dear Jack: It's fixed! Contrary to your suggestion, I opened Conflict
Catcher 1st (curiosity) and it immediately trashed 3 things:Firewire
enabler, apple qd3dhw, and an apple audio ext which must have been the
culprit (have no firewire or qd printer, but did change some sound
volume recently).Closed it for later, then did all my backup cds when
I realized it hadn't shut down, so I didn't do software restore, and
it stayed on all night in sleep mode, still good this morning. Now all
I have to do is get rid of conflict catcher (won't let me have my
extensions manager on apple menu)unless it all sort of reverts in 6
more days. Anyways, problem solved. Many, many thanks.
