Question ID: 198781
Each day I make up a slurry consisting of:

8 oz yogurt
4 oz canned peas
4 oz canned corn
4 oz canned pumpkin
½ cup Fiber One cereal
35 grams whey protein powder
8 oz 1% milk

My question: am I losing the fiber value of the peas and corn by
pulverizing them in this fashion?

Hi pelkeyrobyn,

Good question, and the short answer is "yes, somewhat", but it
probably makes more of a difference with the corn than the peas.

"Dietary fiber is reduced by using pureed or tender cooked vegetables,
ripe, canned or cooked fruits without skin or seeds, and well-cooked
tender meats."
http://www.dietsite.com/Diets/GastrointestinalDisorders/Low%20Residue-Fiber%20Diet.htm

Low Fiber Diet:
"The Low Fiber Diet is composed of foods that are low in residue
content. This diet therefore reduces fecal mass and avoids intestinal
pressure."
Recommended [low fiber]: Pureed corn

Fiber:
http://health.rutgers.edu/factsheets/fiber.htm

"Nuts are a good source of fiber and protein. Although nuts contain
fat, it is mostly unsaturated, the "good kind." Several studies have
shown that heart-healthy diets that contain various nuts lower
cholesterol and coronary heart disease risk. With a strong family
history for colon cancer, it's all the more reason to eat plenty of
high fiber foods."

I hope this helps. If you have any questions, please post a
clarification request before rating my answer. Perhaps you could make
a point to nosh on some nuts to make up for the loss of fiber in the
pureed corn.

Thank you,
hummer

Thanks for the additional information, especially in the first quoted
source. Very helpful as I continue to construct a meaningful diet
subsequent to a bout with diverticulitis.

Thanks from me, too. I am battling a Crohn's flare and found
additional low-fiber options from your listings. I am just concerned
that an extended diet like this will raise my triglicerides.
