Was just doing some research on switchboard.com. I figured I'd enter
my own name just to see what's listed and it seems like -- I DON'T
EXIST. All my relatives with the same last name are listed. I have a
listed phone number. I've lived at the same address for 17 years.
What would prevent my name from appearing on such a general info site?
(Can't decide if such anonymity is a good or bad thing...but it is
unsettling.) |

Hi mp7,
I would actually say it's a good thing you aren't listed there, but
before we come to that conclusion, a quick question: Are you listed
when you only search for your full last name and your first initial?
i.e. First: "J" Last: "Smith" as opposed to First: "Jonathan" Last
"Smith". You might also want to enter your address of 17 years in case
you have a very common last name. For some reason, some listings only
include the first letter of the first name in their records.
Please let me know if you can find yourself that way, but remember, I
definitely think it's a good thing that I don't give anybody a chance
to click a single button and pay $14.95 to get a hold of my birthdate,
social security number and everything else necessary to open a credit
card in my name...

Tried searching with first name, without, with initial, with and
without city & state... either nothing shows up, or my few relatives
and their info on a "closest matches" list.
I agree that it's probably best this way, but what could possibly be
keeping me so mysterious?

By the way, mine is an uncommon last name with only about 5 of us in
the U.S. that I know of.

Are other people in the same telephone exchange as you listed (such as
your next-door neighbor)? Thanks.

mp7,
Have you tried reverse searching for yourself?
Try entering your phone number in the Google Search text box in the
format "999-999-9999" (include the quotes).
