I am certainly not an expert on Ghandi but here is just a personal view: From what I know about Ghandi, he understood that the British required cooperation from the people of India to maintain their power. A few people were able to effectively control a much larger population only while the greater population was willing. Ghandi was a great man and I am sure he would have objected to the minority rule in Iraq over the majority. (minority bathe party over the majority shiite population?) As to what he would have done about the war in Iraq, I think we can only speculate. Hopefully you will get a researcher who understands and has read Ghandis philosophy and will be able to give you a good answer. I do ask that you keep in mind however, that even the greatest people do not have a solution to all of the worlds problems, and a problem must be viewed in the context of the location and time it happened. There is little doubt that any type of "peaceful" demonstration in Iraq would not have lasted. It is also clear that the peaceful demonstrations all over the world did little to change the viewpoint of Bush and Blair. Good luck on your assignment! I do encourage you to read about Ghandi a bit more and also try to come up with some ideas of your own even if you get a great answer from a researcher. tisme-ga |

What Mahatma Gandhi would have done 2 months before the war... I do not see Mahatma Gandhi supporting Saddam. He would probably have been in Najaf. He would have used religion and Islamic icons to bring the people together against the war, against saddam and the allies. Alternatively, he cold have had a very symbolic movement revolving around oil. Similar to the Salt March. Oil of Iraq belongs to Iraq. Not the husseins. During the war.... During the Boer War In south Africa, Mahatma Gandhi started and ran a ambulance corp. That was way before he discovered the Non Violence idea Mahatma Gandhi lived during WW2. Though he fought against the british in his own way. He never supported Hitler. In fact he silently backed British in their war mostly because he had his own fight at home. Would he have bothered about the war in Iraq when he could have had more pressing concerns in India? |
