Hello jmcool! I believe I've found just the thing that will help you
with this problem...
To address your first question -
1) The "Solution Center" is the printer configuration utility for
WINDOWS. It should have been installed off the CD that came with the
printer. "Solution Center" should be an icon on your desktop with a
light-bulb in front of a printer; if it's not on your desktop, then go
to Start: Programs: Lexmark Z53: Lexmark Solution Center. With the
Solution Center you will be able to configure your network adapter.
(Refer to the link I have at the bottom of the answer for detailed
instructions from Lexmark.)
For the Mac, there IS NO "Solution Center". You must configure your
network adapter through either the Control Panels (Mac OS 8.6-9.2) or
the Print Center (Mac OS X).
Install the software from the CD that came with your printer. Then:
Go to Macintosh HD: Library: Printers: Lexmark: Lexmark Utility.
Select your Z53 printer. Then go to Macintosh HD: Applications:
Utilities: Print Center, and select your Z53 printer again. Click "Add
Printer". Select "Lexmark Networking", select your printer again, then
click "Add" (again). From there, you will be able to finish the
configuration process.
If, for some reason, you don't have the forementioned CD or software,
you may download it from here:
http://www.downloaddelivery.com/drivers.nsf/printer+driver/DB60A558CEFD8E5D85256AF00077D1EE/$FILE/CJXP53LE.EXE
( for Windows XP )
http://www.downloaddelivery.com/drivers.nsf/printer+driver/9B72EB259D58561585256A5400693E00/$FILE/CJMX53L1.HQX
( for Mac OS X )
If neither of the above links work, then search for "Z53" here:
http://www.lexmark.com/US/support/drivers/index.html
2) MAC address -
The MAC address is printed on the bottom of your N1 adapter. It is
twelve characters long and should read something like this:
00.02.00.10.08.e8
If, for some reason, this address is NOT printed on the bottom of your
adapter, then there should not be any way to retrieve it. I would
recommend bringing the device back to your place of purchase for an
exchange.
3) Other possible problems...
Just to address any problems that may creep up -
Do you have an Ethernet hub? If yes, do you have RJ-45 "straight"
cables connecting all devices to the hub? Crossover cables may not
work. If you don't know whether your cables are "straight" or
"crossover", then you probably have "straight cables".
Do all the ports on the hub where cables are plugged in light up? In
other words, there should be status lights on the Ethernet hub,
indicating the status of each port. Are they all lighted green?
Are the USB light and Network Link light on the N1 adapter lighted? If
no, then you should check for a loose connection or replace the
cable(s).
I hope this helps!!

I very strongly recommend you download this online electronic manual,
which gives you step-by-step configuration instructions for the N1
Ethernet adapter.

Reading the manual provided by Lexmark, I have found another possible
cause of your problems.
Do you have a DHCP server (or an internet router)? If not, then this
may be the reason your adapter is not working,
By default, your Ethernet adapter is set to obtain an IP address from
a DHCP server. This means it needs another computer to give IP
addresses - numerical addresses that identify particular computers. In
your case, you might not have a DHCP server, and your Ethernet adapter
is unidentifiable on the network. You need to GIVE it an IP address.
You can do this by changing the positions of the DIP switches on the
back of your N1 Ethernet adapter. They are probably in the
down-down-down position - you will need to change it to the following
configuration:
Switch 1: down
Switch 2: down
Switch 3: up
This configuration sets the adapter to NOT use a DHCP server to obtain
an IP address.
If this does not work, try the following:
Switch 1: down
Switch 2: up
Switch 3: down
You will have to reconfigure the software. Note that without a DHCP,
your printer's IP address is 157.184.0.1. You may need this piece of
information when configuring the driver software.
Hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for the tips... but I'm still having problems. I reviewed
everything, installed all of the software, but I just am not able to
set up the Print Server, nor set up a printer to print to it. On my
router, the DHCP is enabled, and it shows up on the list of clients -
with its MAC and Ip... I think my main problem is this "solution
center". It is needed to configure the "network" of a printer, and it
searches the network for the print server. It seems I NEED this
solution center to set it up-but I have no solution center with my
Lexmark-which I think i should... I installed the software and
driver, and all I have is this configuration utility which is not what
I need... Why don't I have this Solution Center, and where can I get
it--and if I can't get it, are there any alternatives?
--Thanks! (I know this is a tough question-but I can't get anything
from Lexmark support...)

Did you try setting it up on the PC *and* on the Mac machine? There is
no solution center on the Mac - which machine are you using to setup
the N1 adapter? If the setup doesn't work on one machine, did you try
using the other?
As well, if you have a router - can you try plugging the adapter
*directly* into one computer (i.e. the Mac) and setting it up first?
See if that works? If it does, then it shows that the adapter is at
least working.

Another thing - have you tried pinging your N1 Ethernet adapter
(because you know its IP address)?

A further reason why your adapter may not be working with your printer
is because the N1 Ethernet Adapter does not support the Z53 printer.
On http://www.lexmark.com/US/products/adapters/n1/ and
http://store.lexmark.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/Product?catalog=uspublic&sku=12J0001
, the Z53 is not listed as a compatible printer. This may be the
reason that your computers are unable to "find" the adapter - it may
need a compatible printer to be "activated".
To confirm or deny this hypothesis, I have sent an e-mail to Lexmark
support. I will keep you posted.

Hello - I have received a definitive answer from Lexmark. Below is the
e-mail that I received from their technical support representative.
I'm afraid that the N1 Ethernet adapter is *incompatible* with the Z53
printer.

Unfortunately, the Lexmark Z53 is not compatible with the Lexmark N1
Ethernet Adapter.
If you have any further question, please feel free to submit them.
Sincerely,
Lexmark Presales Representative
