Here is a brief bio of Lynne Withey:
Lynne Withey received her Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from
Smith College, and her Ph.D. in history from the University of
California at Berkeley in 1976. For five years she taught history at
Boston University and at the University of Iowa, then accepted a job
as an administrator in the Office of the President at the University
of California.
She was named as an Assistant Director of the University of California
Press in 1986, and became the Press's Associate Director in 1993,
with responsibilities in strategic planning and general operations.
She has helped to shape the Press's editorial programs, acquiring
books in history, music, Asian and Middle Eastern studies, and public
health, and played a major role in launching the Press's electronic
publishing program. In August 2002, after having served as Acting
Director following the retirement of James H. Clark, she was named as
Director of the University of California Press, the largest academic
publisher on the West Coast. As Director, she will oversee $20 million
in annual sales and will supervise a staff of 100. She is overseeing a
project which, by fall 2003, will have placed 1,500 UC Press books
online for free access to the University of California community. Dr.
Withey currently serves on the board of the Association of American
University Presses, and has chaired several AAUP seminars. She
recently chaired a seminar at the University of California Center for
South Asia Studies.
Lynne Withey's books include "Dearest Friend, A Life of Abigail
Adams," "Grand Tours and Cook's Tours: A History of Leisure Travel,
1750-1915," "Urban Growth in Colonial Rhode Island: Newport and
Providence in the Eighteenth Century," and "Voyages of Discovery:
Captain Cook and British Exploration of the Pacific" (winner of the
Silver Medal award from the Commonwealth Club of California.) Dr.
Withey lives in San Francisco, where she enjoys the symphony and
opera.
