You are the human relations manager for a large firm. The existing labor negotiated contract is up for renewal in six months. What actions will you take to prepare for this. You are expecting a tough negotiation session as you hear rumblings that the union wants to put a stop to outsourcing of work. In addition to an increase in medical benefits and a 4 day (32 hour) work week with forty hours pay. There are 14 outstanding grievance and five could have a serious impact on the tempo of the negotiations. You know that the top management of the company has a plan in place to relocate this plant to a southern state within three years. No one at this outside of upper management is aware of this. You are one of fie people that know of this plan. You are now faced with an ethical dilemma. Should you tell the union about the relocation plans or let it remain a secret until the plan is made public in three years. You are encouraged to stand firm on the negotiated package offered to the union and let the union strike if they choose so. If they strike, the company will announce plans to shut down the plant and start the relocation. You have three issues to deal with. 1. preparation for negotiations. 2. Deal with the grievance. 3. Should you tell the union of the relocation plans. Defend your position and bear in mind there is a moral and ethical issue you need to deal with. a. Who will be hurt and how badly b. Who will benefit and how much. c. What, if anything do you owe to others. d. What, if anything do others owe to you. | |
