Hi.

I've located a couple of statistics...

The first is an annual sales figure that appeared in a 1999 article in
a highly reputable U.S. newspaper.

"... the booming, $ XXX -million-a-year sports bra industry..."

The second is this statement that appeared in well-known trade
publication in 1999:

"Sports bras have been a growing specialty business. Established
megabrands such as Champion Jogbra and Speedo account for XX percent
of the $ XX billion in bra sales ..."

I could provide you with citations and excerpts from these two
articles.

Let me know if you would accept that information as an answer.

Thanks.

Hello.

The first quotation is from the Washington Post. The article mentions
the "$300-million-a-year sports bra industry."

" Not since 19th-century feminist Amelia Jenks Bloomer designed baggy
trousers to give women the freedom to participate in athletics has a
piece of apparel so changed the shape of female fitness. Before the
creation of the mother of all sports bras, the Jogbra, breast
discomfort and embarrassment kept many women from participating in
high-impact sports.
Today women run, climb, skate, play basketball and virtually every
other sport, supported by the booming, $300-million-a-year sports bra
industry, which has followed--or perhaps led--this explosive growth in
women's athletics."
Source: "An Athletic Boom in Busts" by Carol Krucoff; The Washington
Post, Aug 3, 1999, p. Z15.

The second quotation is the from WWD (Women's Wear Daily). It asserts
that "Jogbra and Speedo account for 10 percent of the $4.3 billion in
bra sales at U.S. stores in 1998."

"Nike Inner Actives line of sports bras at VF Corp.'s Vanity Fair
Intimates unit...
...Officials at VF and Nike have never given a first-year sales
estimate for Inner Actives. But industry sources have said the two
powerhouses -- each with a formidable worldwide network -- could yield
first-year revenues of at least $100 million.
Sports bras have been a growing specialty business. Established
megabrands such as Champion Jogbra and Speedo account for 10 percent
of the $4.3 billion in bra sales at U.S. stores in 1998. A big reason
for the product's popularity has been its dual-purpose function -- it
can be worn as an activewear item, or as a bra that offers support,
comfort and fashion, even for sedentary wearers."

Monget; WWD, July 19, 1999 p19

I have located an additional source information.

An article published in September 2000 in the Hartford Courant
newspaper indicated that $437.9 million worth of sports bras were sold
in 1999.

"... More than a year after Brandi Chastain brought them out of the
lingerie drawer and into the consciousness of mainstream America,
sports bras are hotter than ever. In 1999, the industry sold $437.9
million worth, $20 million more than 1998 and almost double the figure
from 1995 ($246.5 million)."

search strategy:
newspaper databases via my local public library
million, sport bras, sports bras, jogbra

I hope this helps. And, yes, if you need further assistance, you may
call upon me specifically. Just put "attn: juggler" in the subject
line of the question. Thank you.
