I would like to acquire the NO.BS domain if possible now or in the
future. I'd like to know:

a. Who currently owns the NO.BS domain? When I visit http://no.bs I
see an aerial photo of the Bahamas but nothing else. If I "view
source" of that HTML page, I find an email address. But so far I have
not received a reply by sending email to that address. I have also
had little success in getting any information on NO.BS using WHOIS
lookups.

b. When does the current ownership on NO.BS expire?

c. If NO.BS were to become available, where could I register it?
Pointers on the Net seem to indicate that http://www.nic.bs should let
me do so, however that site is apparently dead.

d. How much would it cost to register NO.BS?

Howdy joelpt!

I can answer your questions c and d and give you a way to
possibly attain the answer to at least question b, and less
possibly (probably unlikely) get an answer to question a.
Would you accept the above information as an answer?

Looking Forward, denco-ga

denco-ga: I'll accept the answer as you describe it, as long as you
can also give me a good reason why some parts of the answer are
difficult or impossible to find.

Howdy joelpt,

I will start with questions I can answer.

The site that has all the information is the Bahamas
Network Information Centre (BSNIC) website.
http://www.cob.edu.bs/BSDomain/

- c. If NO.BS were to become available, where could I
register it? Pointers on the Net seem to indicate
that http://www.nic.bs should let me do so, however
that site is apparently dead.

Go to: http://www.cob.edu.bs/BSDomain/ and click on
the "Register a Domain" link on the left side (do not
use the Register link at the top as it is broken)
and you should be prompted to download a file named:

RegTemplate.dot

You will have to rename it to a .doc file name such
as RegTemplate.doc in order to open it with a program
such as WordPad or Word.

Fill in the form and send it to:

Management Information Services
The College of The Bahamas
P.O. Box N4912
Nassau, Bahamas

The application may also be e-mailed to:
bsadmin@cob.edu.bs

- d. How much would it cost to register NO.BS?

Go to http://www.cob.edu.bs/BSDomain/ and click on
the Registration Fees link on the left side.

The other two questions might be hard to get answers to
as the Bahamas registrar's privacy policy might be tough.
I do not see why they couldn't give someone the expiration
date for the domain name, but they might be lots pickier
on giving out ownership information. The main reason that
it is not easy to find the ownership/expiration information,
as you have found out, is that they do not seem to be running
any kind of NIC that can be easily queried. I would be more
than happy to email the Burmuda adminstrator with the inquiries
if you want. Normally I would call with such questions, as it
is easier to get such information conversationally, but in this
case, it would be long distance, etc.

For whatever it is worth, to try to track down more information
on the "nobsindex@munroe.net" email address, I called the business
phone number that is associated with munroe.net and got a "we are
not in at this time" recording.

If you need any clarification, or want me to email the
Bermuda .bs administrator, feel free to ask.

Search Strategy:

Used prior knowledge of the Internet Assigned Numbers
Authority (IANA) which then lead me to the website of
http://www.cob.edu.bs and they had a link at the bottom
of the page to the Bahamas Network Information Centre
(BSNIC) pages.

Thanks very much for your very complete answer! Excellent work. No
need to worry about calling the .bs registrar -- I'll take care of
that.

Dear joelpt,

The source code of the website contains the following:

"contact nobsindex@munroe.net for info"

Most likely, nobsindex@munroe.net is the e-mail address of the current
owner of the domain "no.bs". Have you already considered contacting
him to ask if you could get the domain from him?

Regards,
Scriptor

I ran "dig" on no.bs and found that both of its nameservers are run by
a company called Musicvision (musicvision.com and tvmv.com). They
probably own that domain name. Contact information is here:

Putting those suggestions together, I ran WHOIS on munroe.net and got
what seems to be a reasonable administrative contact listing. That
domains shares the same name servers as no.bs, which might be a
hopeful sign of convergence.

Just a final fyi on this question -- I did get an answer using the
d..@munroe.net address:

"Hello, it is not for sale or available."

Guess that about wraps it up! :)

Thanks to all for their help here.
