I'm trying to find out how much was invested in rural electrification
in developing countries in a recent year (2001 or 2000). At a
minimum, it should include projects financed by the World Bank and the
Asian/African/Interamerican Development Banks; adding other lenders or
agencies would be great. Optional extras would be:

 - A listing of the top 10 such projects in a recent year

 - A list or breakdown of projects that used renewable energy (ie, not
fossil fuel)

Thanks!

Dear Sir.

The website www.worldbank.org/astae/lending_type.htm provides a list
of rural electrification projects from the last few years in
developing countries.

This second list on this page includes a breakdown of projects that
used renewable energy. If you click on the specific project headings
you will get a detailed description of each project area, funding and
participants.

The US Trade and Development Agency lists off of its projects, I have
provided you with the links for the reports for the last two years
regarding energy. These projects are sorted by region, pasting these
charts into excel would allow you to sort them by funding if you wish.
 http://www.tda.gov/abouttda/report2000/pabs_energy.html and
http://www.tda.gov/abouttda/report2001/pabs_energy.html

Finally, the site http://wire0.ises.org/wire/doclibs/AfrUtility.nsf/id/CD73B07EE33117F0C125669C00569519/$File/Schramm,G.actual.PDF
provides an excellent article by a World Bank project manager on rural
electrification if you are interested. Also, the Rockefeller Brothers
Foundation has but out an article about selling solar power in rural
areas http://www.rbf.org/selling_solar.pdf, unfortunately this article
is from 1995. The National Center for Environmental Research also has
information on this topic but it is not current.

I hope this helps you in your research.

This doesn't answer the question. It provides some interesting
examples from one lender in Asia, and a listing of studies done by
another minor lender, but not a summary of how much is invested across
all developing countries, from at least the 4 biggest development
banks. It's possible no such summary exists; but the answer so far is
a trivial reading of a single google query.

I apologize that you feel that I have not provided you with an
adequate answer, as a professional librarian I did look in google and
some print resources at a local university for you.

I have found financial models used to set up rural electrification in
Latin America, they include both private and government financed
models:
http://www.iadb.org/sds/doc/SMSEModelsRuralElectricService.pdf

The article, named Models and Methods for Rural Electric Service, was
made by Mr. Daniel Waddle and altough it was writen in 1997 it
provides some examples you may find useful:

1.Private Sector-Financed Programs:
- Bolivian Private Sector Renewable Electrification Models
- Golden Genesis-Fundacao Teotonio Vilela: Brazil Private Sector Model
- Indonesia SHS Project
- Dominican Republic Soluz Program

2. Government Sponsored Programs
- Mexico Pronosol Electrification Program
- Argentina Dispersed Markets Consessions Program
- Chile Programa de Electrificacion Rural

Altough the article does not answer your questions, its conclusion may
be useful to you.
