The instruction at "0x01dc2008" referenced memory at "0x01dc2008. The
memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
This "Pop Up" started a few days ago and comes up when ever I close
Explorer or some other internet associated application. How do I get
rid of it?

Messages similar to the one you gave turn up on a search of
the Microsoft Support Database, but in reference to specific
applications, with specific fixes or workarounds. It will
help us assist you if you can tell us your operating system
(including service pack data) and what version of browser
and/or other programs are giving you this message. These
might include Outlook, Outlook Express, etc.

Thanks for responding so quick! I'm using Windows XP Pro and I loaded
in the latest explorer browser just tonight, I believe it was ver6 as
for the service pack, I'm not sure where I would find that info, could
you please let me know? The only seems to appear when I close out my
internet explorer.

Thank you, likewise, for your quick response.
If you right-click on the 'My Computer' icon on your desktop,
and select 'Properties' from the drop-down menu, the 'System
Properties' window that opens should tell you, under 'System',
that it is Microsoft Windows XP, or XP Professional, followed
by a version number and the Service Pack to which it is
updated, if any. Microsoft has released SP1, or Service
Pack 1, for Windows XP, and SP1a for Windows XP Professional.

My guess is that you have installed the latest version of
Internet Explorer 6 but are using Windows XP without the
Service Pack 1 update. I believe this could cause error
messages of the type you describe.

As for determining the version of your browser, click on
'Help' from the browser menu bar and select 'About'. This
will tell you the version of the browser.

Oops. My bad. I just noticed that you *did* specify XP Pro.

Thank-u for those directions. I've now confirmed that I'm using
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 1. And my
browser is Version 6, but alas I'm still getting that error everytime
I shut down the browser. Might there be away to remove the browser
and then reload it again? Note that I won't be able to correspond
again until Wednesday evening, thanks again.

In Windows XP, including the Professional version, Internet
Explorer cannot, in fact, be removed. Even going to Add/Remove
Programs will not remove it, though it will disappear from the
list of installed programs. Nonetheless, it remains on your
system, essentially untouched.

Since your difficulties seem to have coincided with installing
the latest version of IE6, I would suggest installing Service
Pack 1a, which updates IE6 to SP1a as well. This is not
necessarily a guaranteed fix, but I haven't found any better
options.

Service Pack 1a is available from Microsoft by clicking on
this link to Windows Update:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

You can learn more about SP1a in the discussion on this page:
http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp

I will add one other option to explore prior to installing
SP1a. In Windows XP, if you go to Start --> Settings -->
Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs, and click on Internet
Explorer 6, there should be an option to 'repair' the
installation, in addition to 'uninstalling' it (which, as
I've said, doesn't really do so). You could try this first,
making sure all instances of the browser are closed, and
perhaps this will fix your problem without installing SP1a.
If that doesn't work, I'd go ahead with the installation of
SP1a.

Good day Sublime, I've tried all that you've suggested and still no
luck! Though, I wasn't able to locate the "Internet Explorer 6" on my
Add/Remove programs list, the closest I've come to it was "Internet
Client 2.4". Also I was able to narrow down in my "Event Viewer
exactly when the error started to appear, if you'd like I could email
the "Txt" version of these logs to you, maybe you could make heads or
tails of them. Thanks again for the help thus far, and to let you
know, I loaded all the latest critical updates from "Windows Update"
and still no change.

Good day, jughound...

So, having installed the latest updates from Windows Update,
does your Operating System now say Service Pack 1a under
System Properties? And does your Internet Explorer now say
Service Pack 1a under Help --> About?

Internet Explorer *may* not show up under installed programs
in Add/Remove Programs, depending on changes made to your computer,
such as certain updates. In this case, it becomes necessary to
repair it by using 'System File Checker'. Doing this, however,
checks *all* your system files, not just IE6 files, and generally
takes a lot of time. Another option is to go into the registry
and fool your computer into believing IE6 is not installed,
which will then allow you to re-install it (otherwise, you will
get a message saying IE6 is already installed, and Setup cannot
continue).

Both of these options are described on this page from MS Support:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378

This page, from The Elder Geek website, describes the same options
in, perhaps, a more user-friendly format:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm

I would recommend method 2, in which you use the registry to
tell the computer that IE6 is not installed. You can then either
download and install it anew, or use the install file (ie.inf)
as detailed in method 2 in this page from The Elder Geek:
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

If you have never edited the Windows Registry, I can understand
that you might feel reluctant, however, I believe this to be
the simplest option to repair IE6. You could, nonetheless, run
System File Checker, and it might solve your problem.

Either way, you will have to follow the instructions on the
pages above to the letter.

As for emailing me the Event Log contents, researchers are not
permitted personal contact with clients under Google Answers'
Terms of Service. You could post them here, and perhaps the
contents will provide some insight.

Sublime, as usual your quick response is most appreciated. You've
given me many things to consider trying and be sure I will try first
thing in the AM. Thanks again and if this works, you've certainly
earned your 10 bucks and then some!

Only when you think you can see light at the end of the tunnel does
this happen! I had altered the registry as per " The Elder Geeks"
instructions, he even provided me with a link to down load IE6 and
Outlook 6. Started to download and I got the following Popup " The
software you are installing has not passed Windows Logo testing to
verify its compatibility with Windows XP. This software will not be
installed. Contact your system administrator." and BLAM, it refuses
to complete the install! Any ideas?

Hello Sublime
Sorry I've taken so long to respond, but my wife just gave birth to
our very first SON and as you can imagine I've been a litte
pre-occupied. As far as the bloody error is concerned, I've bacically
given up on trying to fix this my self as it seems I've exhausted
almost every avenue imaginable. Well probably far from the truth,
lets say every option I'm capable of at this point. I shall be
reinstalling xp soon and though it may seem like maybe some sort of
copout to a great problem solver such as your self sublime, its the
fastest solution for me at this time. Just too many things on my
plate now! Thanks for all your help and please feel free to grab the
Answer Money, or at least let me know how I can release it to you,
you've certainly earned it!
Cheers!

Cheers, Jughound!...

...and congratulations on the birth of your first son!
I completely understand how your priorities have been
elsewhere, and I don't see it as a 'copout' to reinstall
Windows XP (it's probably the first thing that several
tech support sites would charge to tell you)...*grin*.

And I'm very appreciative that you took the time to
contact me, and for your offer to pay me for my efforts,
even though they didn't result in the ultimate resolution
of the error message.

Since I've typed this in the 'answer' box, it will
result in my being paid. I hope you've found this
service useful, and will return to explore other
concerns, as needed....perhaps the relative merits
of cloth vs disposable diapers...*smile*.

Warmest regards for you and yours...
