Hi.

I cannot scan at all

According to XP, I have "successfully" installed the scanner using
XP's recognition: When I click properties in device manager I can
"test scanner" which TURNS THE LAMP ON and looks like it is scanning
and then XP tells
me it is installed and working correctly and passed the test.

However it does not show up in My computer where I can only see my
logitech camera which also is the only one showing in the Aquire
wizard.

What can I do?

I do not understand what files I need to install in what order at
canon's site and when I try installing I get a dll error.

But since XP is happy I should be able to access the scanner as a
standard twain device...

On the opposite note, the logitech 3000 pro cam software can take
reasonable pics but when I use XP's "Take a picture" I get horribly
small blue images of 4k each

PC: Dell Pentium III 600MHz 256MB

Gigs free on the harddisk.

Thanks

Hello,

From Canon's D660U Support site, they had problems with the shipped cd
version of the XP/2000 drivers, so they have updated drivers on their
website. Please download them at the provided links below and follow
this procedue exactly to make sure you have cleared out the old
drivers before installing the new ones.

"1. Power ON your computer and log on as Administrator.
2. Select the Start button, then right-click My Computer, select
Properties. (Note: 'System Properties' window opens.)
3. Select the Hardware tab then the Device Manager button.
4. Under 'Other devices', right-click the ? CanoScan icon and select
Uninstall.
5. If you see the 'Confirm Device Removal: Warning: You are about to
uninstall this device from your system' prompt, select OK. (Note: The
'other devices' and the "? CanoScan" icons are removed in Device
Manager.)
6. Close the 'Device Manager' and 'System Properties' windows.
7. Uninstall 'Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X' (XX= version number) by
selecting Start, then Control Panel and selecting Add or Remove
Programs.
8. In the 'Add or Remove Programs' dialog, select Canon ScanGear
Toolbox X.X, then select Change/Remove.
9. At the 'Confirm File Deletion - Are you sure you want to completely
remove Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X and all of its components?' dialog,
select Yes.
10. At the 'Remove Programs From Your Computer - unInstallShield will
remove the software Canon ScanGear Toolbox X.X from your computer.
Please wait while each of the following components is removed ...
Uninstall successfully completed', select OK.
11. Close the 'Add or Remove Programs' and 'Control Panel' windows.
12. Disconnect your USB cable from your scanner.
13. Download your Windows XP/2000 Driver and Canon ScanGear Toolbox
program from the Canon Website to your computer desktop or wherever
you save downloaded files.
14. Double-click the downloaded Windows XP/2000 driver file. Files
extract to C:\temp\xxxx (xxxx = the folder created from the download)
15. At the 'Canon - Information: All items were successfully
extracted' dialog, select OK. Installation instructions will launch.
16. Follow the installation instructions.
17. To install the Canon ScanGear Toolbox double-click the downloaded
file 'Toolbox v(xxxx).exe' (xxxx = the version of the program) from
where you saved the downloaded files.
18. At the 'Canon - Information: All items were successfully
extracted' dialog, Select OK.
19. At the 'Canon ScanGear Toolbox - Welcome' dialog, select Next.
20. At the 'Choose Destination Location' dialog, select Next.
21. At the 'Select Program Folder' dialog, select Next.
22. At the 'Setup Complete' dialog, Select Yes, I want to restart my
computer now, select Finish.
"

The correct drivers for your scanner can be found at this link:
http://12.129.248.84/techsupport.php?file=http://128.11.96.121/support/files/scanners/csd660u/Sgcsu581.exe&p=csd660u&q=download&d=yes&type=windows

And the Scanning Software Suite can be found here:
http://12.129.248.84/techsupport.php?file=http:%2F%2F128.11.96.121%2Fsupport%2Ffiles%2Fscanners%2Fcsd660u%2FTbcs251.exe&p=csd660u&q=download&d=yes&type=windows

Please print out this little guide and follow the instructions step by
step, that should get you on your way to getting your scanner working.
These new drivers should do the trick. My guess is that XP installed
its Microspank drivers upon auto-detection instead of the Canon ones,
or as stated on the support site, the shipped cd version of the
drivers isn't up to par with some XP systems.

Thanks for the answer. I have a few problems
1. the first link is the Toolbox+driver
the second seems to be the toolbox PLUS the film accessory handler.
I cannot get the FAU installed because the dll is in use by the
original toolbox
I will try to uninstall again and this time runt the FAU first

2. The scanner STILL does not show in my computer - if I go to control
panel, printers and other hardware, scanners, it shows and I can get
it to scan with the button on the scanner but it does NOT show in my
computer AND the aquire menu is disabled in paint (I disabled my cam
to see if that was the reason)

Thanks,

Michel

Ok - I can scan using the buttons on the scanner.
I used the task manager to kill the D660UUTY.exe and the SGTBox.exe
and installed the FAU too.
Then I used the control panel to assign the two buttons to the two
utilities.

The scanner STILL does not show in any twain aquire dialog and I
cannot get it to show in my computer - If you can help me there I
will be very happy. As it is now, I am quite happy with your answer
although it only confirmed what I had done already so I will rate you
well regardless..

Glad to see you at least got partial functionality. I'm going to
search today to see if there's a separate issue concerning twain
driver installation. I would assume that it's in the same package as
the other drivers. Which application are you using to try to use the
twain driver (photoshop, etc.)? Once I know that I'll be able to
search for compatiblility issues for the D660U twain driver vs.
programs using it. Twain is a standard though and there shouldn't be
any driver vs. program issues, but lemmie know none the less, I don't
mind searching. (I'm looking for a scanner myself and if this works
out for you, it's decently priced, and I might pick one up since I've
read so much about it already heh).

I am just testing it in ms paint where there is an
File, From scanner or camera
option and it only shows my cam. If I disable my cam, the option is greyed out.

Thanks.

It also does NOT show in Microsoft scanner and Camera wizard
I can however insert from the scanner from word...

OK Here's what I came up with:

"Get from Scanner or Camera" Option Is Unavailable in Microsoft Paint
(Q293614):
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q293614

has information on MS Paint not recognizing certain scanners because a
WIA (Windows Image Aquisition) device driver was not installed, or the
scanner is incompatible for WIA. From Canon's website here:

Canoscan D660U Specifications:
http://consumer.usa.canon.com/scanners/csd660u/index.html

it seems that your scanner has support for various software protocols
including TWAIN but there's no mention of WIA. They may or may not
release a WIA driver, or the next release of the Canoscan D660U
drivers might include WIA support but there's no garantee. You can
e-mail them here:

https://consumer.usa.canon.com/cgi-bin/ots4.pl?p1=Scanner&p2=CanoScan+D660U&p3=1&hbcategory=%2FTech%2BSupport%2FScanners%2FFilm%2Band%2BDocument%2FCanoScan%2BD660U

and mention specifically that you are inquiring as to when WIA support
will be added for your scanner. This is the best I can come up with
for a solution at the moment. Thanks for letting me help. Your best
bet is to just use other applications to scan images for the moment,
and then open them separately in MS Paint to work on them.

If it helps any take make sure you have the 'Still Image' service
running (stisvc.exe)

I've had a lot of headaches and hour with Canon tech support all
because of that.
