Hello tairuadennis-ga, While spurious-ga has provided some useful information, I believe that spurious's interpretation is incorrect. Moreover, I now feel confident that I have found the answer. Latitude 40.71100 and Longitude -74.01170 does not, in fact, fall in the middle of Ground Zero. Rather, it is somewhat east of the middle of Ground Zero, as well as east of the southeast corner of Tower One. You can see this by comparing the Mapquest map with the Adelaide map, or better yet, with this map: "World Trade Center - Site Plan Drawing, with Notes" The Great Buildings Collection http://www.greatbuildings.com/cgi-bin/gbc-drawing.cgi/World_Trade_Center.html/World_Trade_Site_Plan.gbd The latitude seems nearly right to answer your question. Indeed, it translates to 40° 42 Min. 40 Sec., just three seconds south of what I indentified for the Tower One antenna. The longitude is too far east. It translates to 74° 42 Min. 42 Sec., seven seconds east of what I identified for the Tower One antenna. If you plug in the coordinates that I identified for the Tower One antenna into Mapquest and zoom in as far as possible, you'll see this: "Latitude: 40° 42 Min.43 Sec., Longitude: -74° 00 Min. 49 Sec." Mapquest http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=degrees&latdeg=40&latmin=42&latsec=43&longdeg=-74&longmin=00&longsec=49 This does indeed appear to be the location of the Tower One antenna, contrary to what spurious-ga indicated. It is at the same position as the middle of the roof in the Great Buildings Collection drawing -- lined up with Dey Street and between Washington Street and the West Side Highway. I believe that the location of the southeast corner is best placed one second east and south of that antenna -- in other words, Latitude: N 40° 42 Min. 42 Sec. and Longitude: W 74° 00 Min. 48 Sec. "Latitude: 40° 42 Min.42 Sec., Longitude: -74° 00 Min. 48 Sec." Mapquest http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=degrees&latdeg=40&latmin=42&latsec=42&longdeg=-74&longmin=00&longsec=48 It is logical to move the same amount south and east from the antenna, since the antenna was in the middle of a square roof. The facade of the building was 208 feet wide, and so the antenna was 104 feet from the east facade and from the south facade. A second of distance is 101.45 feet, meaning that one would need to move about one second east and one second south of the antenna to reach the south corner. "World Trade Center" [mentioning length of facade under "Discussion - World Trade Center Commentary"] The Great Buildings Collection http://www.greatbuildings.com/buildings/World_Trade_Center.html "GPS Coordinate Explanation" [mentioning number of feet in a second of distance under "Degrees/Minutes/Seconds"] LIFE - Guide to Australia http://life.csu.edu.au/geo/coord.html The position on the Mapquest map matches the location of the southeast corner of Tower One on the Great Buildings Collection drawing. On the Mapquest map, this point is located between Dey and Cortlandt Streets, and is lined up with Washington Street. That was the location of the southeast corner of Tower One, as indicated by the drawing. I hope that this information is helpful. - justaskscott-ga Search terms used on Google: "world trade center" degree minute second feet "40 42" "74 00" |

I was satisfied with justaskscott-ga rationale and investigations to obtain an answer to my question. I also appreciated the comments of other researchers although they didn't carry the information to it's conclusion as scott did. Thank you very much everyone. tairuadennis |

The best I could find on this relatively guarded subject was this single reference: Latitude: 40 N 43 Longitude: 74 W 00 Is this sufficient as an answer? Best regards; Tutuzdad-ga INFORMATION SOURCES ASTRODATABANK http://www.astrodatabank.com/NM/TerrorismNYDC1.htm |

Here is a little broader reference, but it doesn't specify a particilar corner: http://www.kimdara.com/usaphotomaps/ N. Latitude 40.71100 W. Longtitude 74.01170 tutuzdad-ga |

Extremely close to what you're looking for: "ANTENNA LOCATION: ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER, NEW YORK, NY (40-42-43 74-00-49)" "Report No. 24459 - Broadcast Applications" (March 30, 1999) [near bottom of page, under "Commercial Digital Television Station Applications Accepted for Filing"] Federal Communications Commission http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/Mass_Media/Public_Notices/Brdcst_Applications/ap990330.txt Like tutuzdad-ga, I'd be happy to post my comment as an answer if it is sufficient. |

I'm not a Researcher and these guys have helped me out before, so you're honor bound to pick one to pay if my comment answers your question. tutuzdad-ga's reference looks pretty close to me. Try the following link, click aerial photo and drill down to the highest resolution. You're looking at the middle of ground zero. http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?latlongtype=decimal&latitude=40.71100&longitude=-74.01170 USGS shows thermal hot spots that confirm the exact locations: http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/ofr-01-0429/thermal.r09.html Thermal hot spots are located at: Location Temperature Area Hot Spot N Latitude W Longitude (Kelvin) % FOV sq meter A 40o 42' 47.18" 74o 00' 41.43" 1000 15 0.56 B 40o 42' 47.14" 74o 00' 43.53" 830 2 0.08 C 40o 42' 42.89" 74o 00' 48.88" 900 20 0.8 D 40o 42' 41.99" 74o 00' 46.94" 790 20 0.8 E 40o 42' 40.58" 74o 00' 50.15" 710 10 0.4 F 40o 42' 38.74" 74o 00' 46.70" 700 10 0.4 G 40o 42' 39.94" 74o 00' 45.37" 1020 1 0.04 H 40o 42' 38.60" 74o 00' 43.51" 820 2 0.08 Positions are in degrees-minutes-decimal seconds, datum WGS84. Position accuracy is estimated to be approximately +/- 6 meters (18 feet). Adelaide University has a technical document that has a FEMA map on page 4 which shows the layout of the WTC site. http://www.dhpc.adelaide.edu.au/reports/106/dhpc-106.pdf Cross-referencing between the above FEMA site plan and the below USGS satellite thermal imaging key, we can see that G (40o 42' 39.94" 74o 00' 45.37") corresponds to the South Tower and C (40o 42' 42.89" 74o 00' 48.88") corresponds to the North Tower. Maybe you can more accurately spot the positions and interpolate exact coordinates of the spot on the building that you want. http://pubs.usgs.gov/of/2001/ofr-01-0429/hotspot.key.tgif.gif According to this data, justaskscott-ga's reference places the antenna on the roof of the South Tower. For confirmation and additional information, an astrology website gives WTC building coordinates (40N42:41, 74W00:45; map sourced) and impact timing (seismology sourced). Link was found by googling similat sites to tutzdad-ga's reference. http://www.astrodatabank.com/NM/WTCAttack.htm |
