I am planning to start a Web Design Company in Michigan. This company is going to be a home based. I would like to get some help on how to start, register companies in Michigan? What type of company should I register (Sole proprietorship or partnership)? Benefits of each type of company? Where do I register? Do I need to file at County Level (Macomb County) or state level (Michigan)? Is there any benefit, if I start this business in my wife's name (women owner benefits). The list of forms I need to use for registration. How do I file the tax? If there is no income from my company in first year do I need to file tax? I do not want any help on domain name registration. Please give me some detailed info or some helpful links. |

Hello Smith2003 - I'm going to recommend a couple of things for you to consider as you start to go into the Web Design business. As an aside, I've been designing Websites since 1995, and I wish I had this new ebook prior to starting, would have saved a lot of wear and tear on the getting started, formation, etc. I have just finished reading it, and it is full of good information about the BUSINESS end of Web Design. It's entitled "Start Your Own Home-Based Website Design Business" ... my advice is get it and read it. You'll be very glad you did. - http://www.websitedesignbiz.com/index.htm Then, I just came across this information this morning, and you may want to look at it, too. The article lays out a pretty comprehensive outline on how to arrange your charges. Although it says "advertising", the information covers any free-lance business, and it's worth considering. - http://www.rensch.com/about-advertising.htm#CHARGES I wanted to give you this information, because I can relate to your questions. Good luck, Serenata |

That book serenata may be good, but $49 for an ebook? A little steep! I've been running a part time web design business and have done very little outside of setting up a bank account using my own name dba(doing business as) my company name. I file taxes as a business at the end of the year and that's about it. I think if I was making tons of money and/or hiring employees I would have to do more but if it's a little home business really I wouldn't worry too much about it. I let a professional do my taxes because I could never figure it out and she knows how to make it work well for me. Good luck there's a zillion web designers out there. Luckily there's businesses starting every day and well over a billion poorly designed web sites that need a work over. -shiva777 |

Dear smith2003 and shiva777 Frankly, the book that Serenata recommended is EXCELLENT! http://www.websitedesignbiz.com/index.htm Take another good look at that book. One of the advantages of an e-book is that it lets you work along with it, using the links directly THAT book contains an excellent business plan for to make the business successful. It also has one of the things most coveted by my web designer readers on the HelpDesk - a series of sample contracts. So, don't scoff at the price. It's worth 10 times that in the time it will save you and mistakes it will save you from. (yes, I ended a sentence with a preposition - better than ending with a proposition. eh?) Incidentally, to answer your questions about what business form you should take - read Fred Daily's NOLO press book - Tax Savvy for Small Business http://www.nolo.com/lawstore/products/product.cfm/objectID/8B17922C-836F-4F71-A67225892035843E The form of business you decide to use will determine whether you register it at the local level or state level. I know, you need more information....this is just the basics. Listen to Serenata - she's in the web designer business. She knows good tools when she sees them. Your TaxMama-ga |
