Question ID: 200894
How do I get my accents keys to work in Windows XP?

I am trying to use the English-International keyboard configuration in
Windows XP for accents. I have set up the keyboard in Control Panel
correctly, but the dead keys (accents) are simply not working. When I
type <~> + <n> for example I don`t get the ñ character. How can I fix
this?

I know how to configure the Languages options, and I am sure the
English-International has been set up correctly.

Hi lucianot!
The standard way to type accented keys using the English-International
is to type the accent and then the letter, so your way should produce
the right result. I tried it on my Windows XP computer and it worked
(ñ), so the problem is probably that you didn't activate the United
States-International keyboard option. To check this, right click on
an empty space on your taskbar, choose Toolbars->language bar. Make
sure that United States-International is selected.

Unfortunately I am pretty sure I have English-International corretly
selected. (I can see the EN symbol on the taskbar.) The problem lies
somewhere else...

Note that the keyboard is working fine. I get the correct symbols
including accents when I type them. I just cant get the accents+letter
combination to work correctly. The problem is also universal, whether
I type in Word, IE or Outlook.

Hope this helps.

Hi lucianot,
I'm pretty sure there's no keyboard configuration called
"English-International", but only United States-International. On the
right of the EN in your taskbar, if there is a keyboard icon, it
should be United States-International that is selected.

Hope that helps,

Sorry, I meant United States-International under the English (United
States) language selection. That is currently active, but the
accent+letter combination is not working.

Hi,

I had never activated this before, so I had the luxury of going
through the process until I got it to work. I thought I had everything
done everything correctly but it didn't work. Until I changed the
Default Input Language.

Look at the top of the settings page.

Under Default Input Language there is a drop-down box. The selected
option needs to be:

English (United States) - United States-International

After selecting it you need to restart your computer.
