Question ID: 200987
I am using Mac OS 9 and I want to find out the IP address of a server.
I can go to Apple-Chooser-AppleShare-(ServerName) and connect, but I
want to know the IP address of this server, so I could go
Apple-Chooser-AppleShare-Server IP Address and enter the IP address
and then connect.

Hi mezpro2020,

What server (other computer) are you trying to connect to?

Do you have direct access to this computer? If you do, try this: On
the Macintosh to get your IP address try the following:
Apple Menu --> Control Panels --> TCP/IP Control Panel

Here is an alternate idea: Go to that computer (or tell the person who
owns that computer) to go to this internet address and tell you what
the ip address is: http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/

This has not been submitted as an answer, but if you could more
clearly describe what you are trying to do, where the server is and
where the client is, I would be better able to assist you.

Hello Mezpro2020,

The answer to this question will vary based on:
 - how your network addresses are assigned
 - if you have a domain namespace server (DNS)
 - which applications you wish to use
 - the access you have to the systems (client / server)
If you could provide some additional information, it should be
straight forward to answer the question.

[1] Do you use a server to assign addresses (and they can change each
time you start the system) or are they statically assigned? If the
addresses can change - you need to use the host name and not the
address to connect to the server. The name will be converted to an
address at each connection.

[2] If you have a DNS, using the host name would eliminate the need
for the address.

[3] You can use a utility such as Mac TCP Watcher to find your IP
address and look up other machine names / addresses. My copy is from
1996, but it still works OK - even as a classic application running
under OS X.

[4] As the other request for clarification describes - you may be able
to check the settings on the server directly (and then type them in on
your client system).

I have direct access to a client that can connect to the server
through the chooser, but I don't have access to the server. The IP
address is statically assigned, and has DNS, so it would be ok if I
could just find out the host name.

The chances are that the server you are connecting to is running
AppleShare over AppleTalk only, and TCP/IP for that machine is NOT
enabled. Therefore, you cannot find the IP address of the server,
because it doesn't have one!

If you are connecting to the server though TCP/IP, even though you go
through the chooser, you should be able to get the IP address of the
server by using the "Get Info" command.
Highlight the server then press Command-I. In the middle of the get
info window will be "Where:". It tell you Zone of the server (if
any), the name of the server, the IP Address and how your connecting
(AppleTalk or TCP/IP). You will only get the IP address if you are
connecting to the through TCP/IP.
That should answer your question.
