This question will be in 2 parts. One is looking for statistics, the
other for specifics. I am starting a new business in Michigan. I must
be honest I'm starting it at least one year before planned because of
layoffs so my funds are limited. While I hope my pricing is fair, I'm
also hoping the challenge will compensate;-)
I would like the names of, as many as possible, small to medium
businesses that have been hacked by hackers or cyber attack in the
West Michigan area in the last 3 to 5 years (Grand Rapids, Lansing,
Muskeegon, Kalamazoo, Holland...etc.). Preferably no less then 10
names. |

Hello,
I'm sure you're not looking for an answer (especially for 100
bucks)that says..."Sorry, there aren't too many cyber attacks to
report". But...sorry...there just aren't very many!
I've done what I consider to be quite a thorough search, first on
Western Michigan, and then more broadly on the entire state. Here's
what I've come up with:
--a radio station in Grand Rapids hit with a computer virus
--two schools (in E. Lansing and Dearborn) that got hacked
--a small ISP in Ann Arbor that was hacked
--two articles in Michigan-specific magazines discussing how local
businesses are responding to computer security threats (mostly from
the point of view of selling services, but with some mention of local
companies responding to threats).
--results of a survey (national, not Michigan) showing cyber attacks
on the rise from both hackers and disgruntled employees, and that the
majority of attacks are never reported for fear of negative publicity,
and drawing additional attention to vulnerable systems.
That's it!...that's what I've got, and as far as I can tell, there
isn't much more information out there to be had. Let me know if the
full details would be of interest as an answer to your question.

Tell ya what, I'll take the names of the schools, and the name of the
ISP, and do you think you could come up with the names of at least 10
businesses in West Michigan that have been infected by either the
Nimda virus, or the Shaphire/Slammer Worm? Both of those took
advantage of vulnerabilities in Microsofts code.

Hello again badamsios,
Your request seemed very reasonable to me, but try as I might, I
haven't been able to come up with anywhere near ten names of W.
MIchigan companies affected by Nimda, or other viruses for that
matter. Basically, no one falls prey to these things and then turns
around to issue a press release about it -- most of it stays pretty
quiet.
Bottom line...I don't have much more to offer than I mentioned in my
last posting. Let me know if it's of interest to you as an answer to
your question. Keep in mind that you have an option of re-pricing the
question, if you feel that's appropriate.

Greetings, badamsios!
Because admitting that one's computer system has been hacked or
crippled by a virus, worm, Trojan Horse, etc. is tantamount to
admitting to computer system incompetence and lack of security, few
companies will 'fess up to something like that. Customers (and
employees) would lose confidence in the company, and the company could
become the target for further concerted, directed attacks by hackers
and virus writers.
You can see why few companies will publicly admit to have fallen
victim to such attacks. It is usually kept very hush-hush.
