I need to somehow arrive at an estimate of the number of CIVIL DEFENSE
LITIGATORS in the U.S. Alternately, I need enough data points to
support the notion that an accurate estimate is impossible to obtain.
Here's what I know so far...
I am told that no precise figure exists that would accurately
quantify the number of civil defense lawyers in the U.S. as attorneys
are not required to register their practice specialty. Its also true
that there are a number of lawyers who occasionally practice civil
defense but who do not specialize in that area.
There are ways to estimate the number of litigators (not specifically
civil defense) in the U.S. For example, a Martindale-Hubbell search
counts about 180,000 lawyers whose statement of practice includes
litigation.
Alternately, we can look at the major trade associations catering to
litigators. ATLA, for example, claims more than 50,000 members and the
ABAs Litigation section claims more than 71,000 members including
trial lawyers, judges, and others interested in litigation and ADR.
DRIs membership includes some 22,000 litigators, mostly insurance
defense.
To restate, my main question is:
HOW MANY CIVIL DEFENSE ATTORNEYS ARE THERE IN THE U.S.?
Obviously, I am looking for data points or analysis beyond what I
already have.
If there is any way to break down your estimate by practice area
(insurance, employment, etc.), that would be helpful. I realize I may
be talking about carving up a fiction into highly skeptical pieces, so
please cite all sources.
