Dear James!-ga,
While I have no expertise in the technology you are offering, I'm sure
that the need for cutting-edge environmental solutions in China is
there. The government is very supportive for this kind of projects.
Real Angles do not exist in China, like they do in the US, but the
VC's are out to search for projects like yours.
I have been keeping a close eye on the VC's here myself for my own
projects and up to, say, a few months ago the market was dead. VC's,
scared by the downturn in the IT, had been cutting down their own
operations.
But they are back. I attended last week at meeting on wireless
technology here in Shanghai and I met at least five VC-firms. A few of
them are interested in much more than only wireless technology.
The best one for you would be New Margin (www.newmargin.com), the
leading VC in China. They are very well connected. Other Chinese VC's
are rather poorly organized investment arms of the local governments,
but these guys have been hiring a great deal of Chinese returnees,
paying them a competitive salary. They seemed rather qualified. New
Margin is also very well connected with the government (one of their
leading people is the son of president Jiang Zemin and that still
helps in China.)
The Lunar Group was also present (www.lunar-group.com) and interested
in acquiring projects again.
China elabs (www.chinaelabs.com/home.htm) is also hot: a joint venture
between New Margin, BCG and the Deutsche Bank, combining expertise,
capital and connections. I talked to them for the last time at the
beginning of last year (see my article at
www.chinabiz.org/articles/show.asp?id=1128) but they seem also well
positioned.
Again: they are eager to get their business going again, so there is a
world to win.
Good luck with your project and let me know if more information is
needed.
Cheers,
Fons
PS: Visited a few weeks a go the small town of Lanxi in Zhejiang
province, where they showed me their own 'green' toilet, producing
biogas for some local restaurants. Green is fashionable in China! |

Hi James,
I checked the url: it is working from my place, so there must be a
temporary technical hickup.
Just recalled in the subway another VC I talked to two years ago:
www.chinavest.com
Their url was not working, so I traced their address:Shanghai
Suite 336 Bund Building, No. 12 Zhong Shan Dong Yi Road
Shanghai, 200002
Tel: 0086-21-63293610, Fax: 0086-21-63293951
email: chinavest.sh@chinavest.com.hk
I have not heard from them in the past 18 months, but they did have an
extensive list of projects outside IT too.
WHen you are talking to VC's it is important, first to have your case
prepared to they can grab the basics in a short time. Second: they
need you as much as you need them. They are desperately looking for
business. They are very careful after the downturn of the IT-industry,
but they do need projects to make money for their investors.
Good luck.
