I want to make QUALITY (not too dumb looking) crafts for a group of
people i did a wine event with--I have over 1000 wine corks only. No
wine bottles or labels. I thought about trivets or hot pads out of
the corks. I thought of a design grapes, wine glasses, etc. and am
fairly talented w/glue guns, paint, etc. Can also create just off a
picture w/o detailed instructions. I need to make about 15 and have
about a week to make them. I have already tried to look at Sunset
Magazine.com (did not have code); Crafts magazine.com (sent to a
subscription site). Thanks for your help. Cherylanne Farley

Two great ideas from Catalogue City:

CORK COLLECTOR'S MESSAGE BOARD
“The middle is a dry erase board so you can leave important messages
for yourself or your family. Use your prized corks to create your own
unique border, which you can use to pin notes and reminders. Our
Message Board is also great for restaurants and wine bars to display
menu specials. Whether at home or work, this functional board is a
great way to display your favorite corks.”

Here’s an idea from Laurie:

“I saw the neatest wreath at my local wine shop....it was made
entirely of wine corks! There were 3-4 rows of corks glued on to a
straw wreath, about 12" diameter. They added some natural colored
raffia and some plastic grapes on a vine (I can do without the
grapes...they added a tacky look) but...what a neat idea!
I've been saving corks in a huge glass vase that is displayed in my
dinning room...now I know what to do with them!”

Carol Watkins of El Segundo, Calif., talks about her cork reindeer.

“To make these guys, Watkins glues eyes, a red pompon nose, and wired
garland or decorative pipe cleaner antlers to a wine cork. She
finishes with a pin back to make wearable lapel pins or a chenille
stem to fashion an ornament.“

In the article “CORKART - Creative crafts that last long after the
wine's gone”

“Corks can even be fashioned into unique wine-bottle holders. Ben
Miller, 16, of Cutchogue created his own cork masterpiece as a
Father's Day gift a couple years ago.

Ben built a cork holder around an empty 1.5 liter wine bottle, gluing
rings of corks together around the circumference of the bottle, from
base to neck. When the glue dried, he removed the empty bottle and his
creation was ready to hold a full bottle at the dinner table. Since
it's a great insulator, the cork helps keep wine chilled. The holder's
sides keep bottles from dripping and its triangular base made of corks
prevents the bottle from leaving rings on the table.

Ben's gift was such a big hit that he was commissioned to craft a
second holder for a 750 ml bottle. He is considering trying to market
the holders at local wineries or as custom-made gifts using a
specified winery's corks.”

Trash to Treasure:

Create a unique framed cork board out of a picture frame and wine
bottle corks. Paint and umber over an ornate picture frame and add a
piece of plywood and hangers to the back. Hot-glue corks onto the
plywood.

The "Trash to Treasure" segment is filmed at Art & Architecture, a
salvage and antique store in downtown Minneapolis.
