I want to raise a web page's pagerank. The straightforward way to do
this is to have other pages link to it, but there are only so many
pages under my control. Is there any other way to raise a page's page
rank? One thing I was thinking was that I could try posting the link
to newsgroups or something in the hope that the google crawler would
pick it up. Would this work?

Hi there,

In terms of amount of effort vs PageRank improvement, the best way is
to submit your site to the major directories...

Open Directory
http://dmoz.org
Submission is free, and it feeds the Google directory.

Yahoo
http://dir.yahoo.com/
Costs $299 per year to be listed. Free submission is possible for
non-businesses, but expect it to take somewhere between a long time
and never to appear.

Zeal
http://www.zeal.com
If your site is non-business, becoming a zealot enables you to submit
your site.

A site listed in Open Directory and/or Yahoo will typically be given a
PageRank of 4, and more if it has some other incoming links.

Posting links in newsgroups or guestbooks will not make any
difference.

If your site is good (ie folk would choose to link to it) then I have
a favorite trick that few others are aware of:

Getting Visitors from Dead Websites
http://searchenginez.com/article1_deadurls.html

Please, please do not use any link exchange scheme, for there is a
high chance Google will notice and penalize your site.

Ulimately, and you probably know this already, the only way to get a
high PageRank is to make your site so wonderful that other folk would
choose to link to it.

Best wishes,
