Does anyone know what has to be done to keep pop up advertising from
intruding when I am visiting a web site,i.e. Google Answers. They will
open, sometimes two or three different ads, and jam up my computer so
bad I have to shut down to clear up my system (Windows 98). Its
almost like "cyber spam"

Hi superroy-ga!
As arsenic-ga commented below, it would be a good idea to
download a copy of ad-aware to make sure there are no
spyware programs on your pc. Spyware is the little nuisances that run
in the background and wait for you to establish a internet connection,
and then they start bombarding you
with pop up ads. However, spyware isn't always the problem. I would
suggest in addition to running a spyware detector (such as ad-aware)
you also download and install some
sort of pop up stopper.

Here are some links that you will find useful:

http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree.html
Panicware's free version of the pop up stopper.
(I have used this since it first came out and absolutely love it! It's
fantastic and it's FREE)

http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/
Lavasoft's spyware detector, "Ad Aware"
(Be sure to periodically check for updated signature files when you
run your ad aware so that it will be able to remove the newer spyware
programs)

http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/7/features/browsing.jsp#br6
The web browser, Netscape version 7 already has a popup stopper
feature built in and can be downloaded at
http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/default.jsp
This might be beneficial to you because you can order the cd instead
of downloading it (if download time might be an issue for you). The
browser is wonderful, and the popup
stopper is quite effective. The only drawback is that the pop up
stopper only works with Netscape 7. So if your currently using
Internet explorer you will have to switch if you want
it to be effective.

Popup killer ad stopper.

Thanks, and best of luck to you!

Download Spybot or AdAware; sounds like you have an "ad-ware" problem.
(A hidden program that generates the pop-ups.)
