How big is the new drive?

After looking at specs of the Compaq LTE, I doubt that it may accept a
hard drive larger than 4GB or maybe 8GB. Its mainboard may not have
LBA (Large Block Addressing), which is needed to run humongous-size
drives like 20 to 80 GB. Please check if that's available in the BIOS
settings.

The last BIOS (System ROMPaq) for your LTE notebook is version 7.32 A
released on July 22, 1998. This BIOS update can only provide support
for 4.0GB and 5.0GB hard drives. It's likely that a drive larger than
5GB can only be recognized by your system if it has a formatting
software that installs Dynamic Drive Overlay for the BIOS. However,
even with DDO, there are computer systems that still cannot recognize
large drives. For more information on DDO, please see the following

Are you willing to purchase an additional hard drive controller to
support the larger drive?

You need to partition the hard drive, or upgrade the BIOS. Upgrading
the BIOS is difficule, so I would recommend just making a partition,
or more than 1. I assume you can only use 6 or 8 gig, and that sounds
like the max for your computer. I have an old 400mhz machine with a
20 gig hard drive that I have the same problem with, but with 2 10 gig
partitions, there is no problem. If you need more detailed
instructions on how to create the partition, let me know.
