Wish to know to what Service Condition (SC1-5) of ASTM 456, (America
Society for Testing Materials?) major
motorcycle manufacturers specify their chrome parts to be chromed to;
Harley, Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, etc. etc. Contact me if
clarification needed.

Hello Brute-ga,

Interesting question. From what I can see so far, there isn't
necessarily a single service condition specified for the entire bike
-- different parts seem to be spec'd differently, depending on the
expected wear and tear....from very severe, to moderate, to mild.

Given that likliehood, what sort of information would constitute a
satisfactory answer?

Am interested to know what groupings/definitions of parts, by
manufacturer, are included in each Service Condition - not every nut,
or bolt but the individual parts in a/the grouping,if poss. - ex:
chain cover, primary cover, clutch cover, etc. etc., and level of
exposure that drives or defines (definition of antipicated
service?)which SC a part or group of parts are chromed to. Poss.
example, 'high mounted' chrome such as handle bars, headlight
housings, versus 'low' ones like kick stand, exhaust pipes that might
be more susceptible to road grit, pebble impact or sand blasting.
Don't know the proper name of groupings-hope you can provide.
Am trying to clarify which manufacturers do superior chroming and
which do not and the SC levels they spec their parts to. Contact me
for more clarification

Hello again,

Thanks for the clarification, but I'm still not sure where to go with
this one. There are five ASTM Service Conditions for chrome plating.
Of the five, only the two most protective -- SC4 (very severe) and SC5
(extended -- very severe) would likely find use in motorcycle parts.
I'm not sure you would find much difference between manufacturers in
terms of which SC gets applied for which parts.

However, manufacturers do often include specifications that go beyond
just adherence to ASTM codes. There may be significant differences
between manufacturers in this respect. But you're not likely to find
any publicly-available documentation of the differences...trade
secrets, and all that.

I'll keep poking around, but let me know if there's something specific
you're after beyond just the service conditions being used.

Trade secrets?? That info would be readily available by metallurgical
testing of each part if someone were so inclined but thats big $.
'Difference between manufacturers' is precisely what I'm after as well
as 'specs that go beyond...' and if various parts are chromed to
diffirent SC levels due to their location/position on the bike, wish
to include that as well. Desire this info for Harley, Honda, Yamaha
if poss. One other manufacturer desired also, BSA, Triumph, BMW,
Kawasaki, - U pick the last one.
