Hi Could you give me a chipset and motherboard recommendation for someone who wants full ECC RAM support under Linux (Redhat 9)? I plan to use a socket 478 Celeron 4 or a Socket A Athlon system. David |

David, Chipset is not what decides whether or not the motherboard will support ECC, it has to do with the types of ram the motherboard is designed to accept. Motherboards that support ECC ram are more expensive because their use generally is restricted to server systems. As for ECC supporting motherboards for the Socket 478 http://www.tufshop.com/store/product2054.html This is the Intel D875PBZLK Pentium Motherboard, lots of features - fully supporting ECC ram. As for AMD based systems it appears only the MP based systems (Dual Proc) support ECC http://www.8anet.com/merchant.ihtml?pid=34&lastcatid=5&step=4 This link is the a TYAN S2466N-4M dual AMD MP which is a very good brand of motherboard manufacturer. Hope this helps! |

Hi, I don't know how to post answers, but read this. We have a Athlon. A good motherboard and chipset (on the motherboard) is a Epox EP-7KXA. We ordered ours from http://www.motherboards.com. Be careful if you do because there is a Rip-off Article from them for another piece of hardware. helpandrersearch-ga Thank you |

I agree with 1978 when I say that os support is unnessecary for ECC ram to function properly. Many motherboards have a setting to enable or disable ECC support. All error checking and correcting functions are taken on by the motherboard's memory controller, so if your motherboard supports ecc ram and it's bios has a setting to enable or disable this fucntion, you are in the clear. |
