Dear jonbray, The following is a list of websites that provide specific information on mountain bike routes in the United Kingdom: MTB: Britain offers detailed route descriptions with pictures as well a six star rating system for climbing difficulty, downhill difficulty, and an overall rating. A few of the routes currently rated on the website are: New Pink Heifer, Red Bull, and The Karrimor. http://www.mtbbritain.co.uk/route_guides.html. This site, however, is specifically for southeast Scotland and southeast England. http://www3.clearlight.com/bikeroutes/locatmap.htm. http://www.anthonynolan.org.uk/fundraising/london_se/cycling.html http://www.bikinguk.net/web/ http://tigger.uic.edu/~jfazio/uk.html http://all-terrain.members.easyspace.com/ -> as of 1st July some for starts, i just had a quick look out of curiosity, no routes as such, i don't think. Suggest you get out your A-Z and hunt out areas of greenery (i go through Epping Forest) or look for canals (its possible to cycle to central London avoiding roads for 95% of the way) Try to get to Camden Lock - v nice for a sunday afternoon. Good luck. |

Although London is a populous city, it has plenty of off-road cycling. Some of the best off-road cycling is on canal and river towpaths. British Waterways' cycling pages start here: http://www.britishwaterways.co.uk/site/cycling%255F23.asp You will need a (free) permit from British Waterways, and you can apply for one on the website. Sustrans - a charity which develops shared foot and cycle paths - now includes online route-mapping of the entire National Cycle Network on its website. As well as the towpaths, this also includes off-road paths built on disused railway lines, river walks and other green spaces. This link is to the London area overview: http://www.sustrans.co.uk/webcode/RegionPage.asp?SelectRegion=London&ad= The full London Cycle Network, which when complete will cover London comprehensively, is at http://www.londoncyclenetwork.org This includes route maps for each borough, and is probably most useful for getting around London than for leisure cycling. Most LCN routes are on roads. The London Cycling Campaign is London's main pro-cycling organisation. Their pages are at http://www.lcc.org.uk Some of England's best cycling is in the home counties, accessible easily from London by train. Some websites with routes are: Cath's cycle routes: written descriptions of routes, to be combined with maps: http://www.hertscycling.freeserve.co.uk/ The Thames Valley Cycle Route: http://www.cycle-net.org.uk/thames%20valley%20cycle%20route.htm H25 - the as-yet-incomplete London Orbital Bridleway (bridle paths are nearly always accessible to cyclists): http://homepages.which.net/~phil.wadey/routes/h25.htm Most cycle routes are best done in conjunction with Ordnance Survey maps of the relevant area. The Ordnance Survey website, http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/ has a 'Get a Map' service which allows you to download (small) maps of a specific area for personal use. |

www.singletrackworld.com www.bikemagic.com both these have frequently used forums where you could ask about routes in a particular area of the country. If it's in South East UK, also try my club's homepage: http://www.addiscombe.org |
