I am looking for funded research opportunities in Discrete Mathematics or Combinatorics. I do have a PhD, so student grants are no good. The funding agency must not be NSF or NSA. Permanent residents of the US should be eligible. I am not flexible with the subjects, that is, answers that require research in other parts of mathematics will be rejected. |

Hi mikike-ga, The American Mathematical Society website http://www.ams.org/ has the following job database for a variety of mathematical disciplines: "The Employment Sector Search offers a search of the database by a broad range of applied areas of employment in mathematics. The search can be further refined to a specific field of employment by selecting the topics listed on the pull-down menu. Finally, the Profiles and Forums database can be searched by Academic Degree, limiting the search to the highest mathematical science degree earned by the individuals profiled in the Careers Bulletin Board." http://www.ams.org/careers/search.html#sector Also, SIAM (the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), http://www.siam.org , has a listing of current Professional Opportunities in applied mathametics: http://www.siam.org/profops/profops.htm | |

Would you consider cryptography? A slew of discrete mathematics fits in there... |

Hello mikike, I assume that since you have your PhD youre also familiar with the major organizations and institutions in the field. Your best bet for finding funded research opportunities will be through making connections with people already working in the the specialty areas of Discrete Mathematics or Combinatorics. Your challenge is to identify the places, events, groups, associations, academic institutions and other organizations where these people congregate and approach them directly asking for information about current funded research projects. Below Ive listed a couple of possible specific opportunities and a longer list of specialized resources for Discrete Mathematics or Combinatorics. Good luck on your search. czh http://www.research.att.com/areas/math/ Mathematics Research AT&T Labs - Research, Shannon Laboratory 180 Park Ave, Bldg 103, Room C223 Florham Park, NJ 07932, USA +1 973 360-8412 (telephone) Permanent Ph.D. level positions -- We occasionally have openings for mid-career and senior Ph.D.s to fill. . While one of your stipulations was that "Permanent residents of the US should be eligible," you did not specify your nationality or the country where you'd like this opportunity... I found a slew of 12-36 month postdoctoral positions requiring interest in one or more of the following areas: - Algebraic combinatorics - Geometric and Topological Combinatorics, convex polytopes - Probabilistic combinatorics - Extremal combinatorics - Relations between combinatorics and computer science - Relations between combinatorics and analysis - Combinatorics of Coxeter Groups - Geometric and Topological Combinatorics - Combinatorics and Commutative Algebra - Combinatorial Game Theory - Algebraic Combinatorics and Computer Algebra If that piqued your interest, here are the eligibility requirements: MATERIAL FOLLOWING QUOTED FROM WEB SITE: As a general rule, for eligibility to apply for any of these positions, the candidate must: - be a young researcher (under 35 years of age, although older candidates may exceptionally be considered); - be able to contribute to one of the areas of activity described in the scientific programme of the network; - satisfy one of the following conditions: - be a national of a Member State of the European Community, - have been a resident of the European Union for at least 5 years, - be a national of an Associated State (for the present contract: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia); - NOT be a national of the country in which he/she wishes to hold the position. - NOT have carried out his/her normal activities in the host's state for more than 12 of the 24 months prior to the appointment. URL: http://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~kratt/ace/positions.html ===== Hope that is of some help! If you'd like me to look for some others, let me know - and, if possible, be more specific about your age, nationality, country where you'd like to do this, etc. TexasT . |
