Hello leander1

The literal translation of Kreuzfenster is cross window. I searched on
both Kreuzfenster and "cross window" to verify that cross window is a
valid architectural term, and that it is indeed equivalent to
Kreuzfenster.

According to a "Glossary of art terms" on a web site about Florence,
Italy, a cross window is defined as a window that is "Divided into
four sections by a mullion and a transom."
http://www.arca.net/tourism/glossary.htm

A mullion is " A vertical member, as of stone or wood, dividing a
window or other opening."
A transom is "A horizontal dividing bar of wood or stone in a window."
American Heritage Dictionary at http://www.yourdictionary.com/

There is a picture of a type of Renaissance window called a Guelph
cross window in Tivoli, Italy at

slowly)
and a drawing of one at

and prictures of some from Germany from 1912-1930 at

and a photograph of a roundish one from a castle in Mühlviertel,
Austria

Really excellent work, much more detailed than I expected and very
intelligent. I'm a translator, so I know what I'm talking about!
Thanks a lot - Leander1
