Question ID: 202798
I'd like to put graphical ads on a series of websites. I do not want
pop-ups, pop-unders, or floating ads that move over the content. I do
not want any ads that only pay when clicked through. I only want
graphics like sky-scrapers and banner ads that pay per ad view.

A complete answer to this question will cite 2 or more of the highest
paying of these companies, their rates (in CPM if possible - which is
loosely translated as payout per 1000 views), and simplified
directions (a link is fine) on how to "sign up" to show the ads on my
pages. Also, any restrictions and site qualifications for signing up
should be noted (such as minimum traffic requirements, content
restrictions, etc...). Ideally at least one of these companies would
not have traffic requirements.

Hello prophet,

In order to serve you a better answer, could you tell me the countries
that your websites receive most of their visitors from? This will help
me provide company suggestions more suited to your audiences.

Thanks in advance -
SgtCory

Thx SgtCory,

The majority of traffic comes from the USA, but a significant minority
comes from other countries around the world. After the USA, the
countries generating the most traffic would probably be the UK,
Germany, and various other western european nations. The content is
all in the English language.

Hi prophet,

I do believe that I could give you two of the best (in my opinion) ad
companies, but must warn you in advance that they do not accept anyone
to their networks. Perhaps you could give us the address to your
website.

Also, CPM is not what the larger and more successful companies ad
companies are selling. It really is performance based these days, but
you can get paid up to $25 for someone signing up for a credit card,
$15 for someone trying AOL, or $1.00 for someone requesting more
information about a product or service. Certainly CPM agencies are
still out there... it is just that I do not know as much about them
and they have been recently suffering a decline.

I look forward to your response,

tisme-ga

Clarification of Question by prophet-ga on 12 May 2003 21:23 PDT
Thanks tisme,

The website is going to be a combination of content from various
smaller sources, so I can't give you a specific URL. None of the
content is adult-oriented or illegal in any way, and no content will
be in violation of any copyright.

I'm only interested in CPM ads. Sure $15 sounds nice, but such a
payment is not guaranteed to occur when visitors come to the site. I
need a core set of advertisements on my pages that can virtually
ensure the cost of the bandwidth will be covered as the pages are
served up. Additional performance based advertising may be of
interest later, but not initially.

Good Morning prophet ,

I'm glad we are on the right track! First let me touch up on your
request for clarification, and then recap my original answer :

Q. What is filtering?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When running CPM ads, there will be numerous companies that will have
advertisements shown on your website. Some of them may even be
competitors that offer similar service. Surely we wouldn't want to
show these ads, so you would be able to filter them out, by either
shutting them off with the click of a button, or other means offered
by the ad agency.

In addition, many site owners have certain ads that they do not wish
to show at all. Some of these ad types include tobacco, gambling and
dating services. You would be able to filter these out as well, by the
means available offered by each company. The filtering options differ
greatly, but I can assure you that the control options for each
company listed will be easy to use, with full instructions should your
site be approved to join their networks.

Q. These companies will not create pop-ups if I do not want them?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Correct. You will find in most instances (definitely with the ones I
had initially listed), that the code you will place on your site for
banners, will
be completely separate from any code that would produce pop-ups or
pop-unders. The option will always be there to try should you change
your mind.

As for the UK company - they do offer what they refer to as 'UK tags'.
This allows you to still use them despite your lower level UK based
traffic. Anytime your website presents a non-UK based user, this code
will automatically insert any other code that you may wish to run.
This means your ad space would continually be earning revenues. You
could simply insert another ad agency code to be displayed by default,
when a non-UK visitor comes to your website.

Most of the ad agencies are moving away from CPM based plans. There
are some that exist, but are for websites that produce about 10 times
the amount of traffic that you mention. Below are some links to these
sites, with only the traffic requirements. I was unable to locate any
more that offer CPM based advertisements within the 30K - 50K page
view range :

Company : DoubleClick
Website : http://www.doubleclick.com
Requirement : About 100,000 Unique Impressions Monthly

I hope this give you enough leads to get started. Please do not
hesitate to ask for clarification if you need it, as I would love to
assist as much as possible. Thanks for the great question!

SgtCory

P.S.
Here is the original information I offered as well :

Here are a few companies and their requirements. With each I will list
the criteria you requested. The percentage(%) share within the company
description is how much of the ad revenue that they share with you, as
directly paid by advertisers.

CPM rates are, and have been dropping for some time, thus the low
payouts. Your request for the highest paying, with minimal traffic
requirements, is almost non-existent. (I know of one in the United
Kingdom.)

Advertising Agencies
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Company Name : FastClick
Website : http://www.fastclick.net
Why : Allows you to control ALL advertisements. (65% share)
CPM : 468x60 Banners $0.50 - $1.00, 120x600 SkyAds $0.50 -
$1.00
More Info : They offer many ad options, filtering and too much to
list.
Sign Up URL : http://www.fastclick.net/join.html
Requirements : 100 Page Views day (3000 page views a month), English
Restrictions : Agreement - http://www.fastclick.net/pub/pub_agmt.html

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Company Name : Burst Media
Website : http://www.burstmedia.com/
Why : Also allows you to control ALL advertisements. (50 -60%
share)
CPM : 468x60 Banners $0.50 - $1.00, 120x600 SkyAds $1.00
range
More Info : Also offers many ad options, filtering and too much to
list.
Sign Up URL : http://www.burstmedia.com/release/join/join.asp
Requirements : 5000 page views month, English
               http://www.burstmedia.com/release/join/join_us.htm
Restrictions : http://www.burstmedia.com/release/join/become_member.htm

I have worked with both of the above companies, and they are both
comparable. In my opinion, FastClick is better in the ad control
department. Burstmedia has an excellent support system. I would offer
more than two(2) companies, but they would be outside your
requirements range with concern to required traffic levels, and CPM
rates.

For your UK audience, here is the one company I found in the United
Kingdom. They do not offer the skyscraper ads you wish to display, but
you can always mix ad companies.

I have worked with them in the past as well - as one of my websites
caters to a UK audience. This is one of the best small to medium size
providers I have ever worked with. There are no requirements, and even
non-UK based websites are free to join. When serving to UK audiences,
the CPM is great. I have translated all monetary figures from British
Pounds to U.S. Dollars.

Company Name : Zencudo
Website : http://www.zencudo.co.uk/
Why : Also allows you to control ALL advertisements. High CPM
rates.
CPM : 468x60 Banners $1.00 - $2.00, 120x600 SkyAds Not
offered
More Info : Filtering, Non UK ad serving and more.
Sign Up URL : http://www.zencudo.co.uk/register/
Requirements : None. Will earn advertising credit for non UK traffic.
Restrictions : http://www.zencudo.co.uk/network/info/pub_basics.phtml

Your current best bet, in my personal opinion :

FastClick Inc.
http://www.fastclick.net

Good luck with all your websites!

Hi SgtCory,

Thanks for doing all the legwork. I was hoping for just a little more
clarification.

I liked how you broke down the stats for the initial 2 companies. The
reason I asked for the others was simply because I was under the
impression that you weeded out some better ones due to traffic
restrictions, which I was not necessarily under.

When I started doing this research on my own, I found countless ad
companies. I had seen other links such as the homemediakit link you
provided, but the amount of companies was overwhelming and their sites
were cryptic.

I'm glad you narrowed the field down to these new companies, but when
I went to those URLs I still couldn't seem to determine CPM rates and
% payout like you did for the initial 2 companies. (Sites like
doubleclick's make it hard to figure out how to even sign up.) Did
you happen to come across this information for the other companies?

If not, no big deal. But that's the info I'm after. (Highest CPMs
and how to sign up.) Any additional information would be great.
Otherwise I'll just accept what you've already written. Thanks in
advance.

Hello prophet,

I apologize for the confusion. The original companies I have listed
are ones that I have used, thus allowing me to have inside access to
the CPM rates. I am certain that their CPM's are very similar, as I
have webmaster friends that utilize DoubleClick and Advertising.com. I
am unsure of the other 2, and again, I apologize for the
misunderstanding.

It's a good thing I started to remember some of the other companies
that I never/slightly worked with, that do offer some information to
the general public :

Company Name : TribalFusion
Website : http://www.tribalfusion.com/
Why : Allows you to control all your ad sales.
CPM : Set your own CPM. You earn 55%, they keep 45%.
More Info : Only supports 468x60 ads.
Sign Up URL : http://www.tribalfusion.com/users/lead/seller
Requirements : 1000 unique visitors a day, English
Restrictions : Contract -
http://www.tribalfusion.com/contract/pubContract.html

Company Name : FocusIN
Website : http://www.focusin.com/
Why : Allows you to control all your ad sales.
CPM : CPM and CPC. Unsure of ad control levels. $1.50 CPM at
last use.
More Info : Allows you to block competitors only. Only 468x60 as
well.
Sign Up URL : http://publisher.focusin.com/cgi-bin/memberJoin.cgi
Requirements : Does not specify traffic levels, English only
Restrictions : G rated sites - No warez , adult sites etc..

I had used the above in the past, but they were under different
ownership, so I can not offer more insight. (Keep in mind I used them
a little over 2 years ago ;-).

I hope this helps a little more, and I certainly hope if you need any
clarification you will ask before rating this answer. I'm here to help
;-)

The second company does not allow you to control all your ad sales in
the fashion that the first one does. I copied the data from the first
and altered as needed, to keep the same structure.

The second company (FocusIN), allows you to run default ads (even
another ad network), in the event that they have no paid ads to
display on your website.

Thanks for your patience -

SgtCory was extremely helpful and accomodating. While I'm still left
with a few uncertainties such as CPM specifics, I feel he answered my
question to the best of his abilities, given the resources available
from the various companies. His answer was definitely worthy of the
price paid.

Hey SgtCory,

You're on the right track with companies that pay per view, and not
per click-through or anything like that. This is just what I was
looking for. Excellent so far. Here's my take:

The first 2 companies you listed are great. The UK company doesn't
really fit, because they require 75% of the traffic to come from the
UK. To clarify, the minimal traffic restriction isn't such a big
deal. I just needed a minimum of one with low or no traffic
requirements. If you have others that you found which have higher
traffic requirements I'd love to know about them, especially if the
CPM rates are decent. I can probably easily accomodate 10 x more than
the amount of page views required by these two companies.

Also I just wanted to ask for a little clarification.
1. What is filtering?
2. Just to be sure, the ad code of these companies will not create
pop-ups if I do not want them?

You can respond to this comment as the answer to this question. Along
with the info you've already provided, I'm sure it will be sufficient
for my purposes.

Thanks,
Prophet
