Hi there- Ok first off just to clarify, i realize there are certainly some programs out there that will do what I am asking, but i want a way to do it that is free, not a link to a commericial software, because I'm only doing this one time most likely. now here is what i am trying to do. one of my harddrives that had windows xp and outlook xp on it got corrupted. windows will no longer boot, but i have been able to extract all almost the data i need off of the drive by installing windows xp on another harddrive and then hooking up (as a slave) the harddrive with the bad version of windows, and using the good version (as master) to access that hard drive and copy the files i need. basically my point is, i cannot boot to the harddrive with the outlook settings i need, i can only access files on that harddrive via another harddrive running Windows. now i have been able to copy my email messages. i did this by copying the file: "Outlook.pst" on the bad harddrive in the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\wahooka\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook and then I got some toolbar settings and other stuff that I don't even know what it is from the folder: C:\Documents and Settings\wahooka\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook those files were named: "outcmd.dat" "Outlook.FAV" "Outlook.NK2" "Outlook.srs" and "OutlPrnt" But apparently none of those files had my email account settings, you know the place in outlook where you configure all the POP3 servers and passwords for each account. I have like 8 or 9 different email accounts in there and i can't remember all the passwords and settings. So thats the part of the the process I need help with, getting those "Email Account Settings" from my old bad harddrive to my new one with a new version of Outlook XP installed. Also in case it makes a difference I have never clicked "Autoarchive my email" when I was/am prompted in Outlook. Thanks alot for the help! |

I hope that you have solved your problem by this time but I wanted to let you know that I too have this problem and I figured it out! By using the program - Genie Backup Manager I was able to backup the email account info. It is not stored in a file, but in the registry. I will say right now that if you go messing around in your registery I will not be responsible! I did this on a machine in which I had nothing to lose so I wasn't worried about screwing anything up - but be warned that you can screwup your machine or your software installations. The Information is stored in this place: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook\9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A6676 The passwords are not stored there - and I can't find where they are. BUT it does have all of the other account info, so your halfway there. I am not certain that every installation of outlook will have the same Keyname (that's the number sequence that makes up the last part), but the three differnt installs I have all did. Once you extract the data you can view the .reg file with notepad - but most of it will be jibberish as the key info is either encrypted or in some kind of binary that I can't read! What you have to make sure of is that the profile name in the key is the same as the one in which you want to add the key to. otherwise the registry will add another profile. The profile name is name right after /Profile/ in the path - in this case it is outlook. Once you have a look with notepad at the file you can simply double click on it and the registy will automatically update. You can check on this by going to the control panel> mail> profiles and look at the properties for the profile - then you can see and edit the email accounts for that profile. Hope this helps - if not you then someone else! SEPP! |
