Children, it seems, do possess the ability to regrow fingertips as
first dicovered in the Sheffield Children's Hospital (in the UK) in
1974. There is also a revolutionary technique practiced, named the
"Ilizaro" method, to "regrow" amputated fingers - I have included
contact details for the Association for the Study & Application of the
Method of Ilizarov International, below. Another technique, performed
by a team of American doctors, was used to reconstruct a person's
thumb using a template carved from sea coral. Also, it's been reported
that an adult woman was able to regrow her first joint on her right
little finger using Diapulse treatments (see below).

"Surgeons in Scotland are studying a revolutionary technique to
'regrow' amputated fingers by stretching the bone. The Ilizarov method
was first developed 50 years ago in Siberia and surgeons in the west
began using it in the mid 1980s in procedures like leg lengthening.
Aberdeen Royal Infirmary's plastic surgery and orthopaedics
departments will become the first in the UK to use the technique for
hand surgery. A team of Russian specialists will arrive in Scotland in
April to train the ARI surgeons over a two-month period. Alan Reid,
communications director at Grampian University Hospitals NHS Trust,
said the technique was targeted at people with multiple finger loss
who were often unable to work because they had lost their ability to
grip. He said that for the procedure to work people would have to have
a stump and it was not possible to grow back joints or finger nails
using the method. He said it was based on stretching, with the bone
being expanded gradually at the rate of 1mm at a time. A maximum
growth of 4cm or 5cm could take about six weeks...."
