Question ID: 203191
Hi, do you know where I can buy a digital clinical (oral or ear)
thermometer which has a PC-interface (RS232) so that I can transfer
the read temperature to a software running on the connected PC
immediately upon a read?

Thanks.

Hi Dadadee. Do you have a specific budget in mind? The thermometers I
found are in the $250 and up price range?

My budget is around $250 to $350 per unit. There are a few specific
requirements that must be satisfied:

a. there must be an oral or ear probe for temperature taking
b. the thermometer must have an RS232 connection to a PC
c. there must be a way for the thermometer to notify our customised
software on a PC that a reading has been taken so that the value can
be immediately transferred and used

Thanks.

Hi Dadadee,

I've spent quite some time researching your question. The most
promising products I've found so far, based on your clarification,
comes from Welch Allyn Inc. Medical Products. They have products that
covers your criteria "A" and "B". However, based on the specs provided
on their website, I can't verify your criteria "C" that's why I'm
posting this as a clarification. I'm located in a different part of
the world (not U.S.) and I can't make long distance phone inquiries
about their products. I leave it to you to try and see if any of their
products completely meet your requirements.

Since your question asks for a source of a specific thermometer, if
ever you find a product in their catalogue that satisfies you, please
respond and I'll post this as an answer. Thank you.

Hi Feilong,

Thanks for the effort. I have checked the link
but am not able to locate the thermometer that
satisfies the criteria which I have specified.
Would very much appreciate if you could give me
an exact link to the product that meets the
specs.

Thanks once again.

Best wishes,
Leon

Hi Dadadee and thanks for your clarification. I thought you can
navigate your way on the first link I gave you. To elaborate, if you
look at this link:

Electronic Thermometers
http://www.welchallyn.com/medical/products/catalog/type.asp?ID=24937

You can open any product there. As an example, you can open this link:

Welch Allyn®
SureTemp® 679 Thermometer with Oral/Axillary Probe and 4 ft. Cord
http://www.welchallyn.com/medical/products/catalog/detail.asp?ID=24949

Download or open its "Technical Manual"
http://www.welchallyn.com/medical/support/manuals/A708980W.PDF and
search for "RS232", you will find this description:

"Serial Communications Port

Transmit, receive data and control CMOS-level signals are made
available for test or system integration via J4. The contacts of J4
are laid out so they are accessible through a slot in the rear of the
case. Communications on a cable length of over one foot should be
driven with external RS232 or other line driving circuitry."

This means that the product has or can communicate through an RS232
interface. Since it has an oral probe, the product fits your criteria
A and B. The only thing I can't verify is if the product can be
programmed to automatically send data to your PC for immediate use.
That is the reason why I'm suggesting that you try and contact the
company through the second link I gave you in my clarification because
I can't make long distance call to inquire. I can email the company
but it might take a long time for them to respond. If you contact the
company, they may be able to provide you with more information
regarding their products and what product meets all your requirements.

Best regards,
Feilong

I have checked with Welch-Allyn. The off-the-shelf SureTemp range of
thermometers are not able to automatically notify the monitoring
software
running on a connected PC whenever a temperature is read. In fact, the
native PCB on the thermometer is not able to connect to the PC
directly. Customisation will need to be done to the device (at a cost
that is beyond our budget).

Thanks and sorry for the delay in clarification.
