Did you originally pay for this domain name, or did you take advantage
of the "free domain name" deal that NameZero once offered?

Clarification of Question by davli-ga on 13 May 2003 15:32 PDT
it was originally a free domain name deal, I started paying namezero
with their plus offer about two years ago.

A Whois query shows the owner of the domain to be NameZero, with
yourself listed as the technical contact. This page at NameZero seems
to be saying that you are the owner of the domain, and you need to
update the Whois record. Once it has been updated for 60 days you may
transfer.

Hello davli,

You mentioned that you have been paying for your domain name for two
years. With this it will be quite easy to transwer the domain out from
namezero.com

First go to this address and sign in:
https://secure.registerapi.com/account/index.php?siteid=22339

Put in your domain name (without www) for example, if your domain was
www.davli.com you would enter davli.com

In the password box, put your password. If you forgot it, click the
forgot password button and you can have it sent to your email address
(assuming that an active email is associated with the account).

Once you are signed in, you need to click on "Update Contact
Information".

It will do a search and then will list all the domains on the account.
Click the checkmark next to the domain you want to change the
ownership for, and click on manage domains.

It will take you to a page with the Title: "Domain Checkout".

At this point, click on Update Contact Information.

Next, click on Administrative.

Change the EMAIL address to YOUR ACTIVE email address. (This is VERY
important.) Change all the other information to your contact
information.

Click Update.

It will take approx 10 seconds for it to update. Save the Confirmation
(including the code it gives you) to a Text File. This Code verifies
that you have updated the information and will be useful if any
disputes arise.

Click on "Back to Domain Information".

Click again on Update Contact Information.

Click on Owner.

Change the EMAIL ADDRESS to your current email address. Change all the
other information to YOUR address and phone number.

Click on Update.

It will take a few seconds to update, SAVE the code it gives you to a
text file... this is a confirmation code again.

Click on Back to Domain Information.

All you have to do now, is wait until the whois server updates the
administrative contact to your email address. As soon as you see your
email address on this page:
http://www.networksolutions.com/cgi-bin/whois/whois?STRING=lidavid.com&SearchType=do
under ADMINISTRATIVE CONTACT (might take a day or a few days), all you
have to do is click here:
http://www.networksolutions.com/en_US/name-it/cra-multiple.jhtml?siteid=100&channelid=P58C100S224N0B1619A8D145E0000V100&clickid=1000000000
and type in the domain lidavid.com

What this does, is send an email to the ADMINISTRATIVE CONTACT listed
on your domain (which you have updated to your email address by now)
asking you if you WANT TO transfer the domain. All you have to do is
click on the link in that email and the domain WILL BE TRANSFERRED to
Networksolutions.com.

Please let me know if you run into any problems, or if you require any
clarifications. I will do my best to further assist you as best as I
can.

Search Strategy:

I have numerous domains registered under namezero.com and have also
done transfers away from namezero.com. I used one of my active
accounts to explain the process in detail.

I just noticed that your domain has actually expired. You will
probably have to pay Namezero to renew your domain again (after
logging in) and then pay Networksolutions to transfer it to them. If
you give namezero.com money, they will renew it for a year, and
transferring it over to networksolutions.com will cost you another
year... but at least you will have two years prepaid.

I am currently listed as the admin and tech contact for lidavid.com in
namezero.com's whois (namezero.com/whois) I updated it on 5/6/03.
problem is, networksolutions.com 's whois still hasn't the updated
info, I suspect that namezero doesn't update networksolutions.com's
registrar anymore because it has recently moved to a different
registrar. I couldn't renew, namezero.com forced me to transfer to a
different registrar.

now networksolutions guys told me to use domainmagistrate.com to
dispute this, but I think it's broken.... have you seen anyone who
successfully gotten their domain back from namezero recently???

Clarification of Answer by tisme-ga on 14 May 2003 20:45 PDT
How and Why did Namezero force you to move to a different registrar? I
just recently moved one of my domains away from Namezero and cannot
see why it would be a problem for you.

I do think you will have to renew your domain with NAMEZERO or the
Registrar THEY choose to send you to, because frankly, your domain IS
expired and as long as they choose to not drop it from their registry,
you will not be able to do anything with it. You will need to follow
their instructions and do what they tell you to do, but I cannot
understand why they would be asking you to initiate a dispute!

Namezero has a policy that if you do not update your info 60 days
before your domain expires, they have no obligation to transfer you to
another registrar.

"In order to successfully transfer your domain, you must have been
listed as the registered owner in the Whois record for 60 days, and
must have updated the Whois more than 60 days prior to its expiration.
If you do not update the Whois record, you may be unable to transfer
your domain during the last 60 days of your domains active
registration. Your domain will become un-transferable during the final
60 days based on the policies maintained by the NSI domain name
registry if you have not previously updated the Whois. Your domains'
status during this period is not subject to the control of
Namezero.com."
SOURCE: http://www.namezero.com/support/plus/whois_update.shtml

As such, Unfortunately you will have to do what NameZero tells you to
do. I am not sure why they sent you do a domain dispute url
(domainmagistrate.com). If you want, you can use the National
Arbitration Forum to try and force Namezero to give you back the
domain: https://secure.arb-forum.com/arbitration/complaint.asp but
this will cost money and time.

I cannot understand why they would be looking for a fight though. I
see no evidence at all that they have transferred the domain away...
in fact the NetworkSolutions.com clearly shows that admin@namezero has
the power to renew the domain (and only that email address at this
point) until the domain gets dropped by the registry (if it does).

You may also want to try contacting Network Solutons because it does
appear that they have a REGISTRAR-HOLD on the domain for whatever
reason: http://reports.internic.net/cgi-bin/whois?whois_nic=lidavid.com&type=domain
but the fact remains that they are the registrar and the email
admin@namezero.com (and only that email) has the power to renew the
domain.

So I guess, the answer is to email NetworkSolutions and request that
they let you overtake ownership of the domain. You can also go ahead
and point out to namezero that they have control of the domain and
that you want to renew it (after which you will be able to transfer
it). I cannot see why they, as a business, would refuse your request!

Please keep me updated.

OK, I think I understand why they are asking you to contact a dispute
resolution service. I still think they are making a mistake. I believe
that they are looking up THEIR whois information (and seeing that they
do not have control of the domain) and they believe that you are
trying to get control of the name. Of course, they are listed as the
administrative contact on networksolutions, because you updated it to
their whois server too late for it to make it to the
networksolutions.com homepage before it expired.

Hang in there, I am working on this.

OK I managed to phone NetworksSolutions and finally managed to get on
the phone with someone who understands what is going on.

Basically, the domain name LIDAVID.com is registered to a partner of
NetworkSolutions (Namezero). The domain is in the middle of a dispute
and has been put on a REGISTRAR-HOLD as a result of this. (I am not
sure if you have initiated a dispute resolution service, but
apparently somebody has, hopefully you).

I asked for specific details about this dispute and what we can do to
get the REGISTRAR-HOLD lifted from the domain. The reply from
NetworkSolutions.com was: We have received a request already and have
faxed out a form to be filled out to a person already, regarding this
domain. After this form is filled out and returned, control of the
domain will be given to that person.

I asked if the person was David Li (I told them I was trying to help
you) and they said yes. They said that David Li (hopefully you) had
called them yesterday.

Please confirm that this is correct. If it is, it seems you are well
on your way to getting control of the domain back.

amazing - the two departments Fax and Support in networksolutions.com
don't seem to have any communication with each other. my fax form was
denied Tuesday because thy wanted Namezero's official stationary
signed off by an officer because the admin contact is
admin@namezero.com according to their whois. I did initiate the
register-hold and there's a special status which allows for temporary
usage of the domain name for 30 days after the expiration date.
(notice in the internic whois the expiration date is 2004)

contacted namrzero and they told me i should just contact
networksolutions.com - i emailed them again explainning i can't
because the admin contact isn't me.

anyway, thanks for your help, calling networksolutions.com was above
and beyond this paltry $5 question (I think so because I've called
them many times and it's frustrating to try to find anyone
knowledgeable there)
davli-ga rated this answer:5 out of 5 stars and gave an additional tip of: $2.00
goes above and beyond the requirements of the question, knowledgeable
in area. thanks!

I remember I registered a "free domain" with NameZero several years
ago. I didn't do anything with the domain; I basically abandoned it.
After about a year, NameZero de-registered the domain, and right now
it still remains un-registered.

This doesn't help with your situation, but it does show how NameZero
doesn't hold onto domains indefinitely.
