In my opinion, government should not provide services which most people can provide for themselves. For unintelligent people, and unlucky people, private charities (not government) should provide assistance and rehabilitation. Clearly government must defend the nation from foreign governments, and make some treaties to permit predictable results when international trade is attempted by indiviuals and small corporations. The need for other government services is debatable. Typically other services are provided with less efficiency and fairness than they could be provided by not-for-profit organizations or for profit organizations. Taxes are collected, not necessarily fairly by government to provide useful services as well as doubtful sevices. Neil |
