Dear laker,
First, let me give you what I found out:
- John Bowman was born 29 August 1782. His place of birth was
Peekskill in Westchester County, New York.
- His father was also named John Bowman.
- His mother was Ann Drake
The source for this information is the genealogy database of the
Mormons. I finally found it by using the following search strategy:
First Name: John
Last Name: Bowman
Event: Birth / Christening
Year Range: Exact Year
Year: 1782
Country: United States
I also tried numerous other combinations, for John Bowman as well as
for his parents. My research led, alas, to no result. The data for
John Bowman (Jr.) stands completely isolated. It is not even clear
what the exact source is; the only thing for sure is that the data was
submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church. But there can be
no doubt that this John Bowman is the right one, since the date of
birth and the year of death match perfectly.
You might want to have a look at the database yourself; maybe you have
any additional data that can lead you to more results:

Unfortunately, I do not think that I can find any more information. It
is not a question of time or money - I simply lack access to data
collections that would be necessary for additional research. But now
that you know John Bowman's place of birth, these addresses might
prove helpful for you:
- The Westchester County Genealogical Society might be able to help
you find information on John Bowman's parents and other family
members:
Westchester County Genealogical Society
P.O. Box 518
White Plains, NY 10603-0518
E-Mail: philodunn@aol.com
Website: http://www.rootsweb.com/~nywcgs/
- The Town Clerk and the Court Clerk of Peekskill are responsible for
the community's vital records, which includes historical files:
Peekskill City Clerk's Office
840 Main Street
Peekskill, NY 10566
Phone: 914-737-3400
Peekskill Court Clerk
2 Nelson Avenue
Peekskill, NY 10566
Phone: 914-737-3405
Vital Records were not mandated by New York State until 1880. If you
are looking for a birth, marriage, or death record prior to this time
period, you must contact the clerk's office of the town, city, or
village in which the event was registered.
Hope this proves helpful!

Dear laker,
First, let me express that I am very sorry I did not provide you any
new information. Had I known that you were already aware of the LDS
entry, I would not have posted it as an answer.
Concerning the reliablilty of the data: I would rate it very reliable.
This particular entry originally came from a member of the Mormon
church. Only registered users can submit genealogy data to the
FamilySearch database, and LDS church members identify themselves
though their membership data (Membership Record Number and
Confirmation date) when registering.
Since the Mormons collect genealogy data for religious reasons, I have
not the slightest doubt that the anonymous submitter of the
information concerning John Bowman had a real source of any kind and
that he did not submit mock data - that would surely be considered
condemnable or even sinful.
So I am absolutely sure that the submitter indeed had access to any
kind of document containing John Bowman's birth record.
The LDS value privacy, so I doubt that they would be willing to reveal
the submitter's identity. However, you might nevertheless want to try
inquiring for information on that particular entry. Here is contact
information for the Family History Department:
Family History Department
50 East North Temple Street
Salt Lake City, UT 84150-3400
Telephone: (801)240-2584
Fax: (801)240-4606
E-Mail: help@productsupport.familysearch.org
Again, I am very sorry because I was not able to do more for you, and
I hope that you will finally locate further traces of John Bowman.
Best regards,
