One of my favorite inspirational stories about persistence and triumph
in adversity is the true tale of Scarlett, a homeless mother cat:
"A mother cat pulled her five kittens to safety from a blazing
abandoned building in Brooklyn (USA), badly scorching herself. One
kitten, weakened by smoke inhalation, died of a virus. Her four
remaining 4-week-old kittens recuperated with her at an animal clinic.
With her eyes blistered shut, her paws burned and her coat singed, the
cat nicknamed Scarlett for her patches of red fur darted into the
flames and pulled out her kittens, one by one. Once all the kittens
had been rescued, their mother conducted a head count, touching each
kitten with her nose to make sure they were all there.
Firefighter David Giannelli, a 17-year veteran with Ladder Company 175
told reporters 'What she did was she ran in and out of that building
five times, got them all out, and then started moving them one by one
across the street.' David found the feline family outside the building
and took them to an animal shelter, where the mother and babies
received treatment... Three months after her heroic feat, Scarlett and
her four surviving babies are not only well, but were adopted in a
blaze of publicity.

As a child, I loved the song "You'll Never Walk Alone," which I first
heard when my grandmother took me to see the movie "Carousel," which
features this beautiful song.
You'll Never Walk Alone
Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark,
At the end of a storm, there's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone...

Here is a beautiful rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone," as
performed by Charlotte Church at last year's National Memorial Day
Concert in Washington, DC:

But my favorite version is Elvis Presley's. Whatever else may be said
about Elvis, the man had a powerful way with a song:

Another thing that I've turned to for inspiration since childhood is
Kenneth Grahame's classic children's book "The Wind in the Willows."
It is, in some ways, a wistful, strange book, not the usual upbeat
kiddie fare. But even in its moments of sadness it manages to buoy the
heart. This is my most beloved chapter, "Dulce Domum," in which Mole
and Rat, at different points in the story, lift each other's spirits
(which, after all, is what friendship is really all about):

Here are some of my favorite inspirational quotes:
"In this world there is nothing softer or thinner than water. But to
compel the hard and unyielding, it has no equal. That the weak
overcomes the strong, that the hard gives way to the gentle - this
everyone knows, yet no one acts accordingly."

Thank you so much for asking this question! I needed a bit of chicken
soup for my soul. Some might say the items I've chosen are
insufferably corny. That may be, but with that chicken soup, sometimes
I also need a bit of corn. ;-)
I'll sign off with this bit of whimsical wisdom:
As I looked back upon the beach of my earthly life, I saw paths
bearing the marks of two sets of footprints, where I had walked beside
the Lord; and here and there I saw long lines which were single sets
of footprints, where I had slumped in weakness and the Lord had
carried me.
But mostly I saw big, blurry ruts...
...where I sat on my butt and He dragged me along.
