Hello toothdoctor123,

Thank you for your question.

Consumer reports offers a buying guide, though it requires a

Refrigerators: Buying advice

Top-freezer and bottom-freezer refrigerators generally give you more
for your money than their side-by-side siblings--and cost less to
run...

...Frigidaire, General Electric, Kenmore, and Whirlpool account for
almost 60 percent of top-freezer refrigerator sales...

So, I checked available models of these brands for you at their sites.

Figidaire:
http://www.frigidaire.com/products/refrigerators.asp

Nothing less than 28" wide.

General Electric
http://www.geappliances.com/shop/prdct/rfr_frz/

Even their 6 cubic foot compact is too wide.

We do come close with this 10.3 cubic foot model at 23 3/4" wide!
http://products.geappliances.com/ProdContent/Dispatcher

And even a tad closer on this bottom of the line 9.6 cu foot model at
23" wide:

GE 9.6 Cu. Ft. Manual Defrost Refrigerator
Model#: GMS10AAMRWW

Features
  Est. Retail Price: $349

Approximate Dimensions (HxDxW):
58 in x 24 13/16 in x 23 in

9.6 cu. ft. Capacity (Fresh Food 8.64 cu. ft. / Freezer .94 cu. ft.)
Full-Width Vegetable/Fruit Crispers
5 Fresh Food Door Shelves (2 Egg)
Dairy Compartment (Egg Storage Pockets)
2 Adjustable Wire Everwhite Fresh Food Cabinet Shelves
2 Ice 'N Easy Trays
Freezer Chiller Tray with Baffle

If this interests you, search the Partial and Manual Defrosts page as
this appears in a frame and can not be linked to.

Kenmore:
Here we have a search that limits results to under 24" wide.
Unfortunately, there is only one model available, and it is 23 7/8"
wide:

http://www.sears.com/sr/product/details/productdetails.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1915352728.1052931027@@@@&BV_EngineID=cccdadcifkdfmdecehgcemgdffmdflh.0&vertical=APPL&prod_id=04681112000&fromAuto=YES&bidsite=

Whirlpool:
http://www.whirlpool.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/CategoryDisplay?cgrfnbr=920&cgmenbr=181&catname=Refrigerators#2

Nothing under 28" wide.

So, our best bet so far is the 23" wide GE model mentioned above.

Improve.net had a thread on narrow refrigerators and their suggestions
lead me to OasisMontana.com:
http://www.conservrefrigerators.com/conserv.html

There appears to be an excellent model here, but alas, 23.6" wide!

Starting to become exasperated, I called Home Depot. They assured me
that GE made something under 22" wide. I didn't believe them. I called
GE at 1-800-626-2000.

Nothing that narrow.

So, I then called Sears and low and behold, they have a Kenmore model
not listed on their web pages. Its 9.5 cu feet, freezer and 21.5"
Wide!!! Its the model 60912.

Now, since I didn't find this on the web and can't verify that other
Sears will have this, the local store number that claims to have this
in stock is 916 924-6100. It is also on sale at just $299 right now.

I wanted to be doubly sure, so I called them at 1-800-349-4358,
particularly since this model shows as a dryer online. Of course,
their computers were down, so I called one more store to double check.

They confirmed availability and the model number. Odd that it is not
on the web site and a search for this model shows a dryer, but two
stores confirming the product increases my confidence your local Sears
can help you.

Search Strategy:

narrow +refrigerator

I trust my research has found the elusive narrow refrigerator. If a
link above should fail to work or anything require further explanation
or research, please do post a Request for Clarification prior to
rating the answer and closing the question and I will be pleased to
assist further.

Regards,
