What bunk. The church was started by the apostles (Acts: They were first called Christans in Antioch) and their disciples. Through apostolic succession the church spread to Rome, North Africa, Greece, Turkey, Sudan, Ethiopia, Persia, India and points between. There were 5 Patriarchs of the church: Rome, Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria. It was the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. The first council was Nicea in 325, as Christianity had recent;y become legal and open (305-Constantine) where the church beliefs and rules were formalized. A total of seven councils were held through the 700s. In 1054, the Great schism occured where the Rome church split from the others. Rome became Roman Catholic (universal) and the others became Orthodox (right worship). The reason for the split was the Church of Rome declaring itself superior to the others and the insertion of the filoque in the Nicene creed (325) without any other Church's approval. Subsequent branching occurred with the start of the Episcopal church and the Lutheran church in the 1500s. Those splits occur to this day with over 26,000 Christian faiths claiming to be correct. The Roman church has made changes of law and practice to this day. The Orthodox church remains changeless. Both claim apostolic succession. There are many more facts and many resources to list. But this is just a response to the adultered and not truthful answer to the question |

Great comment so far mezmar-ga! The Greek word for church used in the Bible is ekklesia; from two words, ek for from out of, and kaleo to call, an assembly, a (religious) congregation. Some great, but easier to read books (simpler language without being dumbed down) for an interested beginner are: History: Church History in Plain Language, Updated Edition by Bruce Shelly ISBN 0849938619 Beliefs: Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem / Zondervan Corp. / 1994 ISBN: 0310286700 Both are available from amazon.com or CBD, http://www.christianbook.com/ The Systematic Theology book tries to fairly contrast and balance all the major different Christian historical traditions that try to use the Bible as their starting point. Grudem also covers the Roman Catholic position in every chapter and occasionally liberal theologians as well. The history of the Eastern Orthodox Church is mentioned, but not emphasized as this is not primarily a history book, but a book with views about what we should believe the Bible teaches us TODAY about a topic (sometimes some history is needed and given) and what might be important to be ready for tomorrow's controversies. I would guess that mezmar-ga might be Eastern Orthodox, given his mention of the 5 Patriarchs and the seven councils next to the idea of apostolic succession. Most westerners are ignorant of such important basics, including when the western crusaiders, in their greed, forgot about Jerusalem and looted the Eastern Church, sacking Zara and Constantinople in 1202, 1204 during the fourth crusade. The two big subjects I have left out are: 1) What should someone DO given what they believe to be true? -- this is called ethics 2) why should we believe in the scriptures/Bible as the basis for our understanding of 'Truth' instead of what some philosophers, scientists, or elders and their traditions say, be they Pharisees, Cardinals or Patriarchs? -- Questions of this nature fall under the term "apologetics" |

To betsamus-ga and jbf777-ga: I must apologize for my earlier comment. I did not read the second line of the question and thus started rambling about the early church. I'm new here, sorry |

The bible is the basis for the christian religion. The Bible says that Jesus christ is God`s only begotten son [ Jesus is not God] The bible was written by many men over a period of fifteen hundred years, starting with Moses writing Genesis through to the disciple John writing Revelation , 96 years after Jesus` birth or 63 years after he died. 2 Timothy 3;16 states that ALL scripturte is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, reproving and setting things straight. God has a name found at Psalm 83;18. Matthew 6;9,10 [ the standard Lord`s prayer] says " Let your NAME be sanctified. Any church that does not use god`s name or has had his name removed from their bibles is not approved by God. The word " TRINITY" does not appear in the Bible but was introduced by the Council of Nicea. Doesn`t make it right. The Catholics use the Trinity, scrub them, The Muslims start with Abraham, but got sidetracked by having to depend on memory alone, and all the splinter groups are doing their own thing. But God must have a group who are doing all the right things. Not going to war, Totally united, Love their fellow man, Follow jesus` example and preach the good news, as Jesus did, "From door to door" . If you search for God`s approved religion, you can find it. The Bible mentions two covenants. the first one, God made with abraham, and then when Jesus came along, He, as God`s representative, made a new covenant stated at Luke 22;29. 1 Corinthians 11;25. Using the bible sorts the wheat from the chaff. |

I like the original answer. Seems to get to the point of the question, which implied a specific faction or denomination within the larger Christian faith. The other comments show how big the issue really is if you go beyond the original question. Hats off to jbf777-ga. lmnop |
