hi rzel,
I was unable to find a children's book with a psychedelic cover
written by a man called Clancy. The nearest thing i could find is a
book called "The Fabulous Riverboat" by Philip Jose Farmer (Book 2 of
the Legendary Riverworld Saga). I would say the 1973 british hardback
edition of this book has a psychedelic look...

The story goes...
"Resurrected on the lush, mysterious banks of Riverworld, along with
rest of humanity, Samuel Langhorne Clemens (a.k.a. Mark Twain) has a
dream: to build a riverboat that will rival the most magnificent
paddle-wheelers ever to navigate the mighty Mississippi. Then, to
steer it up the endless waterway that dominates his new home
planet--and a discover its hidden source.
But before he can carry out his plan, he first must undertake a voyage
to unearth a fallen meteor. This mission would require striking an
uneasy alliance with the bloodthirsty Viking Erik Bloodaxe,
treacherous King John of England, legendary French swordsman Cyrano de
Bergerac, Greek adventurer Odysseus, and the infamous Nazi Hermann
Goring. All for the purpose of storming the ominous stone tower at the
mouth river, where the all-powerful overseers of Riverworld--and their
secrets--lie in wait...

of the Rings." -- Time"

Hi rzel,

I have two more partial matches for you to consider.

The author Holling Clancy Holling wrote several children's books with
nautical themes, including some about river journeys. Although none
has the word "Riverboat" in the title, it's possible that a riverboat
features in the plot. Please let me know if either of these is the
book you're looking for.

Holling C. Holling: Minn of the Mississippi
http://www.addall.com/Browse/Detail/0395273994.html
"The history of the Mississippi River Valley is told in text and
pictures through the adventures of Minn, a snapping turtle, as she
travels downstream."

Holling, Holling Clancy: Paddle-to-the-Sea
http://www.thbookservice.com/bookpage.asp?prod_cd=c5416
"An Indian boy carves this canoe and ... makes his way through the
Great Lakes and down the St. Lawrence River. Along the way, [he] meets
the people (and animals) who populate the historically rich and
marvelously varied Great Lakes region. Each is involved in his
characteristic activities."

Hi rzel,

Here are a few juvenile titles which have riverboat in the title. It
would be helpful if you could tell us something about the storyline,
the approximate age group that would read the book, and the
approximate year it was published.

Wilton, Elizabeth: Riverboat Family. 1969

Palmer, Bernard: Lori Adams & the Riverboat Mystery. 1982.

Green, Cliff: Riverboat Bill. 1976.

Kincaid, Lucy: Riverboat Fun. 1983.

Buchanan, Heather S: George Mouse's Riverboat Band. 1987.

Wellman, Manly Wade: The Great Riverboat Race. 1965

Thanks, hummer

Some more possibilities. By the way, a psychedlic cover indicates
only that the edition of the book you saw was probably published in
the 60's or 70's whenbook cover art took on a psychedelic look. There
may be other editions of the book either older or more recent that may
have a different looking cover.

my friend said that one part of the book had to do with an episode in
which whoever complained about the food on the boat had to be the new
chef...

soap got into the beans and one old guy was about to complain- instead
he said I LOVE SOAPY BEANS...

does this help?
