Question ID: 204036
I have a copy of Encarta reference suite on dvd. It got uninstalled
when I did a system restore and when I tried to reinstall I keep
getting error messages as follows. First the app says it has installed
but when I try to go into the dictionary I get a big long error
message to the effect that it failed to cocreat
instanceclsid_:hrresult0x80004002 no such interface supported and then
the actual dictionary pops up but when I try to go into that I get the
message ewed.exe encountered a problem and will close. I have sent
this error report to Microsoft twice but no joy. Can anyone please
help as I really need this reference suite and I can't afford to buy
another one.
Regards

Gina

I'd like to help you but I have some questions to ask first:
1) What Windows version are you using?
2) What version of Encarta are you using?
3) Have you used Encarta on that same system before you did a system
restore?
4) What was the reason why you did a system restore?
5) Is the installation folder of Encarta still in your drive C: or
Program Files folder? Please check.

Hi Gina and thanks for your fast reply. The reason you can't reinstall
the program properly is because the registry entries are still in the
Windows registry. Go to the "Add/Remove Programs" and try to uninstall
your previous installation of Encarta.

In case Encarta uninstall doesn't work, I could simply ask you to
delete the Encarta folder or remove the entries in the Windows
registry and reinstall the program but you might encounter some
problems in the process. So to make it easy for both of us, I'll ask
you to download a program to clean the registry. Please follow the
following instructions. For your convenience, simply press the "Shift"
key before clicking on a link so it will open a new window or
right-click on the link and choose "Open in New Window".

Go to Jouni Vuorio Website:

JV16.org
RegCleaner
http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

Download and install "RegCleaner with installer". You can download the
file by right-clicking on the link and choosing "Save Target As..."

When installing, just click "next", "next" then accept the disclaimer.

By default, the page opens on the "Software" tab. Before using the
program, please disable your antivirus software and disconnect from
the Internet.

Click on "Author" so that the entries will be sorted alphabetically.
Scroll down and check whatever entries that has "encarta" or any entry
in it.

Do the same on the next column beside "Author" by clicking on
"Software".

Make sure to check only the entries that are associated with Encarta
before you click on "Remove Selected" on the bottom-right part of the
program.

Do the same procedure on the "Startup List" and "Uninstall Menu" tabs
just in case there are any associated entries. Close the programs
afterwards.

Go to your "Program Files" folder and delete the Encarta installation
folder. Restart the system and ignore possible errors that may be
displayed during Windows startup.

When you are already in the Windows environment, disable your
antivirus and install Encarta. Follow the usual installation
instructions and restart if prompted to restart.

Once installed, check if the program is working properly. Now, if
possible, it's up to you if you want to update your Encarta. I think
it has an update feature somewhere in the program menu. You will need
to be connected to the Internet to do that.

I hope I helped saved you money from buying a new Encarta CD. Should
you have any comments/questions, please feel free to post your
clarification before rating this and I'll attend to you as soon as
possible. Thanks for asking.

unfortunately this did not work. However the regclean programme may
come in useful in the the future. Please let me know if you can think
of anything else.
