Question ID: 204793
I see on Ynet.com pictures that are about 3x2 and 2x1 in size and they
are only about 5kb, when I shoot a picture with my camera and edit it
in PhotoShop to the above sizes (auto contrast, Jpeg options: low and
progressive 3) it comes out larger then 5kb. How do I get my pictures
as small as the pictures on Ynet.com so allot of bandwidth isn't used
up? Thanks.

Hello courious-ga!

The key factor with small images sizes is JPEG compression. The more
compression, the poorer the picture quality, but also the smaller the
file size. A lot of image programs have a compression toggle, which
lets you choose the file size. See an example here:
http://www.brycetech.com/tutor/windows/jpeg_compression.html
You have to scroll down to the picture with caption "Corel
Photopaint".

Photoshop offers limited control over JPEG compression. As [
http://www.dsdesign.com/articles/jpeg.htm ] points out, third-party
programs give more JPEG compression, allowing for very compact file
sizes. Therefore, I have compiled a collection of links that will:
a) guide you through Photoshop's (limited) JPEG compression features,
b) point you to possible third-party programs that you could use for
even greater JPEG compression.

PHOTOSHOP:
These pages give procedures for creating compressed JPEGs in
Photoshop:

http://www.extropia.com/tutorials/photoshop/rwe_4b.html
http://www.dsdesign.com/articles/jpeg.htm
http://webmaster.harvard.edu/optimize/06_jpeghowto.html

This website details how to compress JPEGs, with comparisons of
programs and procedures for doing it within Photoshop.

THIRD-PARTY PROGRAMS:
GraphicConverter from LemkeSoft (
http://www.lemkesoft.de/us_index.html ) is a program for Mac that lets
you choose the file size to compress to. (US$30)

For Windows, I found a variety of programs (some of which are
Shareware):
http://www.xat.com/jpegopt/ - "JPEG Optimizer" (US$29)
http://www.vimas.com/ve_guru.htm - "Web Image Guru" (US$39)
http://www.spinwave.com/ - "JPEG Cruncher Pro" (US$49.95)
http://www.xat.com/image_optimizer/image_optimizer.shtml - "Image
Optimizer" (US$39)

Some programs are available as Photoshop plugins:
http://www.imagespro.com/programs/1506/ - "JPEG Wizard" (US$29)

This page offers a whole list of programs (Mac and PC) that will
compress JPEGs and other image types, including GIFs:
http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/optimizationswpc/

This website, with examples, is proof that JPEG compression can
actually such small files (3-5 KB):

Hope this helps!

I downloaded it but how do I compress pictures now? Please tell me
about similar inexpensive plugins for Photoshop that compress pictures
so the size is less then 4kb as I see in
'http://www.vimas.com/ve_imm_more.htm'.

Thanks.

This page provides an example for using a Photoshop plug-in. The
screenshots were done on a Mac, but the same principle applies.
http://howto.lycos.com/lycos/step/1,,2+15+34182+34237+34239,00.html

Generally, the plug-in comes into play when you save the image.
Instead of choosing to save as a specific format (JPEG, GIF, TIFF,
etc.), you choose the name of the Plug-in (in your case, JPEG Wizard).
After you do so, the plug-in specific compression options will be made
available to you.

For similar inexpensive Photoshop plug-ins:
http://www.pegasusimaging.com/jpegwizplug.htm (JPEG Wizard - the one
you have)
http://www.vimas.com/ve_plugin.htm (Web JPEG 3.0 - $19)
http://www.cyberviewcd.com/cvimage/index.html (CyberView Image - $30)

Hope this helps!

With regards to 'Lock table in FrontPage?', I'm afraid that I don't
know the answer... I use a Mac and have no experience with FrontPage.
