I own several hundred domain names. I want to find buyers of domain
names. I do not want to list my domain names on a site,I have already
gone that route and spent several thousand dollars without
satisfaction. I am not looking for sites that are really trying to get
you to register domains with them. I want serious buyers of domain
names. I have spent many thousands of dollars on this site, but am not
sure if they have added the ability to tip for extraordinary answers.
If they have, I would be more than willing to tip up to $300 for a
superb response. Ask around, I am more than fair. To help you see the
type of sites/buyers I am looking for, you can visit dotcomcowboy.com.

Thanks,
Joel

Hello Joel1357,

Nice to see you back again. As a long time customer, you already know
how much the researchers here love to tackle a challenging question
with a handsome price tag (and yes...you can tip, up to $100 I
believe). But I have to admit to hesitating a bit on this one. The
market for domain names has become so soft, as I'm sure you know, that
finding buyers can make finding the proverbial needle in the haystack
look easy.

That said, there are other other services like dotcomcowboy.com that
offer to buy domain names. As an example, there is:

Dollars4Domains.com

Is this the type of answer you are looking for? If so, I have found a
number of services of like these (about ten, so far), but for all I
know, some of them are yours (for instance, dotcomcowboy.com made my
list!).

If you're looking for something beyond just other buying services,
perhaps you could elaborate on your question a bit, to let me and the
other researchers understand better how we can best meet your needs on
this one.

Thanks.

Dollars4domains.com is a good one, I had not heard of them. You are on
the right track. What I am hoping to find is at least a couple of
dozen like these and also just as importantly individuals that are
speculators. The more you can find the better. Just keep in mind that
I am paying the maximum price, and let that be your guide on when to
stop. Ohh and the tip I want to give as well. As you know, I stated
that I would be willing to tip up to an additional $300 for a superb
response. My idea of superb would be 150+, individuals and companies.
Just less than superb but still very deserving of a hefty tip would be
100+. Hope this helps.

Thanks,
Joel

Thanks Joel, that helps a lot.

One more question. Are you familiar with domain name auction sites?
There are a number of them out there -- the eBay's of the domain name
worls -- and they appear to be fairly active in terms of actually
producing sales of domain names (at least, the ones that are most
desirable). An example is:

http://www.domain-auktion.de/

Which includes a list of recent sales:

Recently Sold Domains at Sedo:

 5o.org 175 $US
 dj.net (+ assets) 45.000 $US
 camfun24.tv 400 EUR
 tune.info 175 EUR
 eCasino.com 25.000 $US
 domaincritics.com 300 $US
 vj2.com 139 $US
 igz.com 2.000 $US

Let me know if these should be part of my answer.

First of all thank you for taking the time to ask for clarifications
of what I know and what I want. Ask me as many questions as you want.
I am very familiar with the auction sites and have no interest in
them. I would like to say that if we get to the point where you come
up with the 100+ domain names ($200 tip), or 150+ domain names ($300
tip) then don't worry about how you would get it. I can get
clever..eg...ask a $1 question and then your superb answer to my $1
question would receive my big tip...or 2 $1 questions with a big tip.
So research away, and ask for as many clarifications as you want.

I guess your making progress. I am just curious how many you have found so far?

Hello again Joel,

Yep...I'm making progress. But not a whole heck of a lot. As far as
I can tell, there are only ever been a small handful of domain buying
sites like Dollars4Domains.com in existence, and several of these have
folded as of late. Your desire to have a few dozen listed may be
something I simply can't provide.

As for individual names, I have compiled a few of these as well, but
mostly from news articles. The result is that I have a list of names
of active domain-name buyers, but not their contact information, so
it's of limited use.

I'm going to continue on with my detective work here for a while
longer. Possibly, I'll be able to post an answer later today. But
it's also possible I'll have to abandon ship on this one and let
another researcher take a crack at it, if I can't come up with enough
information to warrant a $200 price tag.

Check back this evening and I'll try to have an update posted.

Pafalafa-ga,

I appreciate your efforts. I have another site for you that might help
in your research by going through it. I've been pulling out all the
stops today and a friend of mine told me about this
site...www.everydayincome.com...there are 2 areas of interest to me on
this site...on the home page, left hand side...domains wanted and send
your domains to 20,000 potential buyers (a targeted mailing list) for
$400..I hadn't thought of targeted mailing lists of domain buyers...I
would be interested in those as a supplement to the others I have
asked for. If you still fall short of what I'm looking for..then maybe
I could post a $1 question to you and then upon looking through what
you send me I can add a fair tip. Just an idea...it would get me some
information and compensate you for the time you have put into it so
far.

Joel,

Thanks -- again -- for the feedback. I've done what I can with this
one, and think your gentlemen's agreement is the right way to go here.

I'm posting what I have without actually answering your question (this
way it's still available to any other researcher that wants to take a
crack at it).

Don't feel you need to compensate me for my time -- that's not the way
Google Answers works. But if any of the information I've found seems
worthwhile, then feel free to post a question to my attention -- as
you suggested -- with whatever compensation you feel the information
is worth.

Hope I'll have a chance to work on something for you again sometime
soon.

This site -- igoldrush.com -- is a "how to" site with a lot of
information but, frankly, I'm not sure how up-to-date it is.

At this link:

http://www.igoldrush.com/links3.htm

is a list of what they call "Domain Name Brokers":

"Domain name brokers can help you find a buyer for your domain name...
or maybe not! Your success rate will depend on many factors, including
the desirability of the name and the number of potential buyers the
broker can expose your name to. Here are a selection of interesting
broker resources. Each resource has been rated from (lowest) to
(highest) and resources are ranked by rating within each section."

Unfortunately, many of the sites listed are no longer in existence,
and for those that are still around, the igoldrush descriptions aren't
always up to date. However, there are some interesting sites included
on the list, which I've included here, along with excerpts from the
igoldrush listing:

GreatDomains [note from pafalafa-ga: site is currently "under
rennovation"]

Capsule Review: GreatDomains has had a good deal of success selling
names that are "obvious" winners, such as loans.com for $3 million and
other single-word domains going for mid-6 to 7-figure sums...Overall a
very good resource and a high-traffic site... worth exploring if you
have some exciting names for sale. Highly Recommended.

WebSiteNames

Capsule Review: WebSiteNames offers to sell your domain names for a
20% commission. The site has a very commendable policy of only listing
".com" names, and of carefully selecting which names it will accept
for listing.

WebSiteBroker

Capsule Review: WebSiteBroker specialises in listing complete sites
for sale, although it also accepts domain-only listings. Listings can
be displayed by price, daily traffic and many other criteria.

Name5.net

Capsule Review: Name5.net provides a service to buy and sell domain
names and web sites. There are no fees to place your domain names for
sale on the site...

Domains.com

Capsule Review: Domains.com is a popular domain name listing site,
though with little in the way of frills. You can list a name for sale
free...

----------
igoldrush also has some helpful hints on how to sell a domain name,
including this one:

http://www.igoldrush.com/sell2.htm

Set up a basic Web page

The next step up is to create a very simple page connected to that
domain, with a short message such as "The following domain names are
for sale. Please contact <e-mailaddress@domain.com> for more details."
followed by a list of the domain names for sale. The benefits of this
sales method is that it requires very little time and effort, yet it
allows potential buyers to at least visit your site on the web, even
if there is nothing there.

----------
A cached file at a site also has a blurb on selling via e-mail, though
I saw no actual links to sources for email lists:

http://216.239.53.100/search?q=cache:8eHjI7tcj9UC:www.domainsecretsrevealed.com/buying-selling-listing-registering-domain-names.html+Dollars4Domains&hl=en&ie=UTF-8

Selling domain names by direct email!

One of the most popular methods people are using to try and sell
Domain names is direct email. This consists of ethier buying or
building (compiling) a list of appropriate email addresses that you
can send your offer to. It is very important that the companies you
contact by email are carefully targeted and include only companies
that may be interested in buying your domain names.

----------

Below starts a list of domain name "speculators" who actively buy and
sell names. These were gleaned from various articles -- I have not
tried to get full contact information for these names.

----------

Dan Parisi, owner of several notable Internet domain names.
Parisi is perhaps the best-known domain name speculator. His
Whitehouse.com website is one of the most successful pornographic
sites on the Internet. He also owns domains that range from the
generic, like Mysport.com and Mystocks.com, to the corporate, like
Wallstreetjournal.com and Microsoftsucks.com, as well as celebrities,
including madonna.com and alyssamilano.com.

A domain name speculator named Murray Solomay (better known in the
trade as Mrdots)...

----------

Ruthie DiTucci, a feisty domain name speculator living in New Jersey
who's been given catchy names by the media (The Duchess of URL, The
Hackensack Housewife, etc.) after making a decent amount of money with
virtually no computer or Internet experience whatsoever...

---------

Robert Mercer of Tierra Verde on Florida's....[owns] columbiacrew.net
and columbia crewmemorial.com

Deus Marchacos envisions an online gathering place for the three
domain names he bought on Saturday....Columbiaaccident.com

William Holderfield of Lexington, Ala. [owns] shuttleaccident.com.

Uzi Nissan has the domain name nissan.com

Lew Richards [owns] CableAd.com and CrimeWatcher.com

----------

You asked about:

http://www.everydayincome.com

You can buy or sell domain names here for a fee -- $59/month.

They also sell email distribution lists to domain name buyers (the
only such list I've seen advertised) -- emails to 5,000 names for $250
   20,000 emails for $400.

They also have an auction-type service at:

http://www.everydayincome.com/premium.asp

that has a great many domain names listed, along with "Current Offers"
for these names. These "offers" strike me as ludicrously large -- do
you really suppose someone has offered $167,000 for
"california365.com"?

I'd be careful with these guys...on the other hand, for a few hundred
bucks, the emails might be worth a shot.

----------

Good luck.

Your suggestion is fine, except there's no need to negotiate...just
set up the $2 question (sorry...no $1 questions) and I'll "answer" it.
Whatever you think is fair value for the information is the right
number for me.

Hello

I have been working on your question and have made good progress,
finding an additional 15 companies and another 100+ potential sites
that I need to work through.

Are you also interested in sites that allow free postings to sell your
domain names?

Hi Joel,

I too own several domain names that I have available for sale. On
all of them I have placed a blank page that reads "This domain is
available for sale" and has a contact email. I've also modified the
domains' WHOIS record to show that they are for sale. With just this
method I have sold domains for tens of thousands of dollars, and I
constantly get quote requests for the domains that I still own. You've
probably tried this already, but I have found it to be the best
method. I have also listed my domains on some auction sites, but I've
gotten no response from them whatsoever.
   Cheers! :)

ironcito-ga, thank you for that comment. I never thought of putting
this domain name is for sale in the who-is record. How do you do that?
In what section would this go?

pafalafa-ga, I already had about 70% of what you found some of it was
good, most was not. I still need to go through the other 30% and will
do so by the end of the weekend. Before Monday of next week I will
determine what I think is a fair amount of money for what you supplied
and drop a comment here so I can see if you agree with me, and if not,
what you think is fair. I will then set up a $1 question for you and
tip accordingly. Does that sound good to you?

Thanks,
Joel

Hi again,

I personally use eNom as my registrar. For each contact
(registrant, administrative, technical & billing), eNom has two lines:
one for the organization name, and one for the person's name. I put my
company's name in the organization field, and "This domain is for
sale" where my name would go.
eNom is very flexible in this matter, allowing you to type whatever
you want in the WHOIS records, as ultimate control of a domain resides
on whoever has the password for the account. It also allows for
account-wide WHOIS changes, so you can change the infomation for the
WHOIS record of several or all of your domains at once, instantly and
with just a few clicks. I believe this is not so easy when using more
strict registrars like Network Solutions or Register.com, but I'm not
sure. I don't know about other registrars either. I've seen domains
registered via Network Solutions whose owners put "This domain is for
sale" where the street address would go.
Ultimately, you can put the message wherever you want as long as
you retain control, you make it easy for potential buyers to contact
you, and it's clearly visible for anyone WHOISing your domain.
   Hope it helps. Cheers! :)

Joel,

Have you already thought to have each domain name resolve to a website
that says, "This domain name is for sale, contact me at xxxxxxxxxx for
more information?" This is very easy (and free) to do. Just setup a
free account with MyDomain.com and you can add as many domain names as
you want. Then, point your DNS records to their nameservers and setup
MyDomain to redirect to a "welcome page" that says the domain is for
sale. MyDomain.com is a free service and it would be an easy way for
people that type in your domain name to instantly see it's free. Not
sure if you're already doing this or not, but together with the WHOIS
suggestion, I think it's a good idea. Let me know if you need more
detailed help on setting up an account with MyDomain.com to make this
work.

This is one of those questions, where none of the answers could be a
satisfying answer :)

Nevertheless.. I thought I would put in some comments..

I am sure you are already aware of all the sources where you could
sell the domains (and in all probability you might have tried selling
your domains at all the places) :)

How about changing your perception for a second ?

* Have you tried leasing out your domain name instead of selling them
?, (you retain the rights of the domains), and you get some money each
year.

* Select a name from your portfolio, search google, see the companies
which are in same trade, become an affiliate of an existing big
company, make some low cost fast content, start making money from your
'existing-strong-brand-recollect' domain name.

* Everybody likes easy to remember domain name, and I am sure if you
have a good generic name, start offering eMail service, these days it
is practically free to setup.. and you could have stream of revenue
for years to come.

* Signup with a PPC Search Engine, and show results on your site, you
get money if there is a click on your parked pages.

There are more things which you can do.. think on this direction.. I
am sure with a good collection of domain name, you could still earn
money without selling them :)

Just in case, If you do stick with selling your domains and not do
anything else, then:

* Make sure your holding costs (renewal costs) should be bare minimum.
* It is a good investment to point all the domains to a page, where
your company logo is shown, so at least you get some intangible
benefit.

What you actually need is good Consultant (Hint hint) ;)

On serious side... if you do manage to get a buyer, you would probably
end up under-selling your domain name :)
